    A lil ? 68 300 with a 70 383. Needs tlc

Big John hit the nail on the head and pretty much covered what we discussed yesterday. That's the route I'd go personally so the engine doesn't come out, and the car sits waiting to be back together.

    A lil ? 68 300 with a 70 383. Needs tlc

What are your goals for the car? You want a beast or something that gets up and goes better than the 2bbl 383? What you already have can be made to run pretty good, reliably without much hassle.

Gearing change... rear end or transmission?

Think of the mileage with an OD 4 speed though... Id say besides changing tire size, maybe down the line swap in the later OD trans. Otherwise leave it be.

Getting more power in a C body

Once you start adding up the cost of setting up a big inch 440 build and compare it with used hemi drop outs with some wiring/computers included... you'll see the gap in cost is closer than you'd think. Also no steeper gears really needed with the 8speed, they are available with a 2.62 or 3.09...

Getting more power in a C body

Honestly. If we're talking about full on engine swaps here with the goal of performance and mileage in mind...I think these days the best bang for your buck will be finding a 5.7 or 6.4 Hemi/8speed combo. For about what you'll spend on an old iron block build with new parts/machine shop costs...

Getting more power in a C body

Good dual exhaust Dual plane intake. Properly tuned carb or EFI Proper timing, between 12-14 initial seems to be the ticket with big blocks I've messed with. Going further... A valve job with oversized valves would be beneficial. I'm guessing you have 516s and small exhaust valves...

440 swap or build the 383?

God I love the 29 roof

440 swap or build the 383?

There's no replacement for displacement. 440 is going to make more torque. 383 is going to rev higher. Either one can be fun. Build up the 383. The gear is going to be the biggest kick. 2.76 is miserable. 3.23 is better. 3.55 is good. 3.91 is fun. 4.10 is a party.

    carburetor for 1978

I would pull your carb off and send it to @Dana He is the only person to provide me with a properly functioning thermoquad for a car @ayilar has me working on.

    Headers on 383

Probably the best bet. If they fit the car

Has anyone used an aftermarket sure-grip?

Overall thoughts on these suregrips? I've got a 3.55 I want to set up, and the price is certainly intriguing.

    best carburetor

The only Holleys I've had good luck with were brand new out of the box. Easy to tune. Really decent for performance/race cars. Cruising in a C body? Give me a Carter or Edelbrock. Sounds like yours needs a rebuild and/or some tweaks and it'll serve you well.

I have a '71 Imperial with an engine leaking oil...

No the freeze plugs is something I wouldn't think twice about changing as well, its something I didn't even think about, because it's a no brainer to me. Glad you mentioned it though, because I didn't think the OP would need to hear it with his plan of action. But its good to cover everything...

I have a '71 Imperial with an engine leaking oil...

If you are going to be in there and you do want to foolishly reuse the old oil pump. At least disassemble/inspect the rotor/clean it. I wouldnt bother using it, but thats just me. This type of car. Lol okay! Sure.

I have a '71 Imperial with an engine leaking oil...

Yep. Theres a really trick oil pan gasket/windage tray summit sells now too. WAY better than a cork gasket. This is the best way to proceed. Id throw a new oil pump on and clean the pick up thoroughly as well. Melling High volume. M63HV I believe is the part#. Someone's gonna chime in and say...

I have a '71 Imperial with an engine leaking oil...

I'd do everything mentioned in the post above, however, I'd do the valve seals as well. Surely they are dry and ready to fall apart and clog the oil pickup. Don't let it snowball.
