Distributor vacuum port touching radiator hose.

I broke in my 383 stroker today. Everything went really good as far as i know, primed it, fired it up and ran it for 25 mins at 2300-3000 rpm. Water temp good, 180-210, no thermostat with box fan in front of radiator, used just water and burped it. She sounded great. As soon as she fired up...

    Engine run stand questions

I am looking at breaking in my engine in about a month or so. I will be doing it on a run stand that I built, so this is the first motor I broke in outside the car. I plan on using a smoke machine to make sure no vacuum leaks, prime the oil before start up and etc... My question is about the...

    How short is too short?

Putting my engine back together and my existing fuel pump pushrod is 3.190 and had no issues with fuel. I do have another one that I am not sure where it came from that is 3.25. I would rather stick with the existing one as I know it is hardened and good, just curious how short is considered...

    Flat tappet or Roller?

Building a stroked 383, something to cruise and street beat a little with. Keeping it under 5500 rpms. Is it worth the extra grand to go roller step up on the street? I have not wiped a cam yet on flat tappets? I would rather wipe a cam then have needle bearings from a bad roller lifter sent...

    Double roller or single?

I was doing some reading about them and it seems that under 550hp, it really does not matter. Am I correct in this statement? Opinions?

    Motor mounts.

Well, I replace my rear main seal for the 3rd time now and while I was there I decide to change out the motor mounts. No one probable remembers, but years ago I showed how I made some mounts out of the the old floating power oems. They worked great with no issues, but I came across a set of...

    60 psi on #6

Some of you might remember that I rebuilt my motor from scratch about 2 years ago and I have about 1500-2000 miles on it since. Jakes 383 rebuild I did a compression test this weekend for shits and giggles and the every cylinder was at 118-120 except #6, which was at 60. My heart dropped...

    11 mpg!!!

I put over 1000 miles on my rebuilt motor this summer so I figured I would consider that broke in. I calculated mpg and was blow away when it figure out to 11 mpg. Stock 383 with edelbrock 600 with 3.23s and driven hard. No highway miles. I was ecstatic, just as good as my ram.

    Beat a dead horse......

I rebuilt my 383 with a mild cam, I keep advancing it and she keeps taking it. I am getting worried, 21btdc at idle and she just loves it. Vacuum is at 16iwc, no pinging, is this getting dangerous or should I keep going? She is really starting to wake up, I know everyone says 12-18 degrees...

    Underhood temps

My car has been running great, other then a ballast resistor, she has purred all summer. Engine temps stays at 180 and creeps to 190 if at idle for awhile. I went to fiddle with the carb to squeeze a little more out of her after I went to pick my daughter up from tennis and I could not even put...

    Noisy valve train

My valve-train seems noisy, I have not opened up my valve cover to take a look but I have a pic of a set I have laying around. My assumption is that this is worn out, as to how oval it is. When I look at my rockers on the engine and if I find something like this, I assume time for new ones...

    Coil question

When the car is running, how many volts should be at the positive side of the coil? I believe my coil is overheating because I get around 20 miles and the car instantly shuts off, no stumble or anything. Coil is hot as can be. Give it 10 minutes, she fires right up, go about 100ft and she...

    Going to look at 3.23s

Found a set of 3.23s for a 741 case and I am going to look at them today. Comes with a rebuild kit for 250. Pictures of the gears look good, what do you think of the price? Since this is the first set I have found in over 2 years for my case, I figure its a must.

    Lead shot

Has anyone ever heard of putting lead shot or lead sinkers in their gas tanks, on the theory that the lead will slowly dissolve and make its way to the motor?

    power steering return hose

I believe I asked this last winter and got no responses but here is the problem. Go into the garage today and notice a puddle under the 880. Find out it is powersteering fluid. It is not leaking, it is condensing through the return hose. It did the same thing last year. It condenses so much...
