I found a vehicle I would like to buy that is nearly on the other side of the country. One of our well respected members has checked it out and gave me a thumbs up on it. The challenge is paying for it because it is owned by an individual.

Have you bought or sold a vehicle like this before? What is a secure way to do this? Unfortunately the bank and AAA are closed today so I cannot ask them.

Thanks for your input.

bank to bank, have done many times, safe and secure, if you need to do something today, Paypal $200.00 to secure the deal until Monday, keep all emails.

I've, three times sent a cashiers check. Once to Washington state, once for a Illinois car and one in Virginia. I was nervous each time but it always went well.

Tell me more... If you didn't get the car was there some type of assurance that you would get the money back?

Nervous... yes very much. The bank simply said once the check goes the money is gone as far as they are concerned. No recourse to get it back if something goes wrong.

Bank to bank wire transfers work great.
Request that the seller scan and send you a copy of their driver license and/or passport (and vice versa) before proceeding. Make sure their address is legit.
Also, work out all arrangements with the seller in writing before proceeding with the money transfer (when and how to get title, how to pick up car, etc)

You had a person check the car. What did he say about the seller?, short ,dark-haired with glasses who spoke a foreign language, or 78 year old grandmother with a walker, you get my idea?, car checked out, contact all checked out. I'd say you bought yourself a car.

"Car is located in USA, however please kindly send payment to Cayman National Bank, by 2200 GMT tonight, to secure this car for your purchase..."

Send cashier check to the person that looked at the car and have them get the car.

This is what I did, but my friend had cash, and paid the seller when he dropped the car off at his house.

I've also paid for a car and went and got it myself. I was in constant contact with the seller, and he kept it til I could sort out the border crossing paperwork. It was almost eight months from the time I paid til I got the car.

I'd be more concerned if the seller was a 78 year old grandmother.
