Engines available in a '70 Newport.

I found something very interesting yesterday. I was looking for a specific book in my "library" yesterday when I came across something I had forgotten I owned. It's a "Chrysler 1970 Data Book." As I said, I forgot I owned it, so I started perusing it.

Then I saw it, engines available in the 1970 Newport. According to it, only the 383 2bbl, 383 HP, and TNT 440 were available. The standard 350 HP 440 isn't on the list.

Were you all aware of this? It was news to me.

Guess I'll stop apologizing for the TNT pie pan on my air cleaner!

mid-MY offering of the "T' code 440 in a "70 Newp. Do you have a "T" code of a "U" code in your '70? If the latter, I think the TNT pie pan is "correct",

I am aware of the Newport 440 model, but it does not appear in the Data Book. All through it only the three engines I mentioned are listed for Newport. However, the letter you posted is from December 1969, several months after this Data Book was written. The 440 and 300 Hurst were later editions to the Chrysler line-up. As such, the Hurst is not in the book either.

There is a page listing all Chrysler engines available for 1970. The 350 horse 440 is listed, but as only being available in the New Yorker and 300.

As for my car, I have neither the T nor the U, as mine was originally a 383 2bbl; I have an L. Concerning the pan, if I go to a mix-make show I keep it on; if a Mopar show it comes off. Don't want to hear some Zealot say, "This isn't no factory TNT car." That's a quote. At mix-make shows, people will comment on the TNT, usually asking what it is? That's when I apologize, and if possible, take them to a Charger with a 440 Magnum in it and show them what mine would look like if it were a TNT. They usually come back to my car to view the differences. It's a nice conversation starter with people who know nothing about Mopar.

The 383-2bbl, the 383-4bbl 330 horse (indicated as hp in this version of the data book) and TNT 440 were available. There is no '68-'70 383-4bbl HP 335 horse assembly available for a C body. The High Performance (HP) designation stopped distinguishing between a 2bbl and 4bbl assembly after the '67 MY when the 335 horse assembly was introduced in B bodies.

Clones/tributes/modifications/customs always draw a lot of attention and scrutiny. (I plead Guilty) Some of it is deserved and most of it is not. Enjoy the car either way.

I have owned my ragtop for 20 years and I have never seen one in person.

However, because of it, when I was having my license plate surround made, I had it say "440 Newport" instead of "Newport 440," just in case someone knew the difference. (Actually, it was my Son's suggestion as I was struggling with printing the latter.)
