No idea. Seller is selling it as 4 speed TF727...
Damn, tailhousing looks like 4wd...

That's an A518, aka 46RH.

We can tell this by the 'bump-out' in the oilpan that is the same as a 727. Both A500 and 518 use the same OD housing, the A500 necks down behind the bellhousing area like a 904 trans, wioth same pan as 904.

The yellow connector looks to have 3 pins, 1 for ground, 1 for OD, 1 for Lockup. Initial years of 518 did not have lockup (all A500s did). The fact that it is 3 pins means it is hydraulically governed like a 727, so is OBD1 and therefore 95-older (I think the hyd-gov follows the OBD1-2 change in 96).

So I would guess that one to be from perhaps 91-95 vintage. I can't tell from teh pics if it's from a 2WD or 4WD, though.

From what I see in the pic it looks like the yellow connector only has 2 pins. It would be nice to have a better shot of the tail housing though

Asked seller, its 4wd tranny :(
Any1 know, is 4wd od/tail -> 2wd od/tail swap just bolt-on job?

Got answer on Fin forums. Yes you can bolt-on swap 4wd od/tail unit to 2wd.
But was too slow with that transmission, was sold already...
Must keep searching, so want OD tranny + 3.9x or 4.1x rear end.

That would've made for a good doner trans to rebuild/upgrade a 727.

Umm... You do know that trans is for a small block and won't fit your 383.. Right?

Chrysler never made an A518 or A500 to fit the big block.

Can you swap the internals from a newer (after the 80's) OD trans to a BB housing? Or do all OD trans have electronic stuff that plugs into the housing?

Cant swap A518 OD/tail to 727. Even internal parts are close, but not that close.

Here's what I had done for a recent rebuild on the 727 behind the 383 in my Challenger using a '96ish 46 re for the doner parts.

Here are a few of the improvements made to my trans. I found a used late '90s 46RE on Craigslist as a doner for some of the mods. The valve body got a shift improver kit and the oem steel check balls were replaced with the composite ones from the 46RE as they don't beat up the separator plate like the steel ones.
New TCI HP intermediate sprags.
New style dimpled input bushing in pump housing for improved oiling.
Replaced main output shaft bearing.
Back planetary set was replaced from the oem 3 gear set to the 4 gear from the 46RE.
Front clutch pack springs went from the 9 originals + 3 reds from the 46RE to = 12.
Front clutch pack bushing replaced with new updated grooved style for improved oiling.
Front clutch pack discs changed from 4 oem to 5 Alto-red .062 discs.
Back clutch pack discs changed from 3 oem to 4 alto-red .062 discs.
Kick down apply lever changed from 3.2 oem to 3.8.
New front and rear bands, good ones.
6 1/2" washers used as blocker in the low/reverse apply piston assembly.
Removed casting flashings from case(one was dangerously close to falling off which would have been disasterous)
This was all done by a close friend of mine whose a guru imo and I'm really looking forward to experiencing the performance of this trans.

You cannot simply put the OD section onto a 727 housing, the casting doesn't have the right geometry at the tail end.

That's a good list, detmatt!!! Please confirm for us that you used a non-LU 518 for a donor, looks like you retained the 727 VB?

IIRC there is something unique to the main housing to allow LU (as well as the VB & copnverter), and there was only a brief run of LU-727s in 78 -- most experienced TC shudder and were warranty-repaired for LU to be non-operational.
