62 Newport 14" steel rims and poverty hubcap ?

Hello all -

Thinking out loud here- I have my 62 Newport sorted out, just did an AAJ front disc conversion ( Most Excellent )... and getting a minor leak patched in my radiator... Thanks to much help on this forum, I am down to a cosmetic issue now...

So, the car runs, drives, stops, and looks great--- but I have the old wheel cover's flying off issue... currently I drive the car without wheel cover's as I am tired off pulling them out of the weeds.. I have done a lot of reading, and am basically down to using silicone to glue on the 2 problematic front cover's..

I am thinking of trying a set of poverty hubcap's instead... I think they may look pretty cool, and am thinking they would be less prone to fly off due to wheel flex as they are more in the "center" of the wheel..

My main issue now, if I go this route, is my car has some "mis-matched 14' steel wheels... I will try to explain, and post some pics, please excuse poor pic quality, as car is garaged in a tight space, radiator out, etc.

My ? is -- I think I need a "3" nub 14' steel wheel--- not a "no" nub, or a "4" nub--- And I am thinking the 3 nub steel 14' wheel would take a 10" poverty cap?

Give me a chance to post a couple pics--- any thoughts are appreciated..

14" wheel 4 nub rim--- will not fit on front hub, as inner hole slightly too small to go on new front disc hub, but works on rear axle -- seems to take a 10" poverty cap?

So, If I decide to go with poverty caps--- I need a 14" 3 nub wheel it seems-- basically wondering if it takes a 10" poverty cap... like the 4 nub seems to... ( But 4 nub will not fit on front brake hub )

( I did not realize these wheels are all slightly different. )

Or silicone on the stock wheel cover's...

I want to DRIVE this car without flinging flying discs down the road...

Thanks to all your help, It's ready to drive.

The wheel flex issue can not be beaten with any kind of "glue" on the wheel covers, period. IF the mechanical limiters (nubs on the wheel rim combined with nubs on the stainless steel wheel covers themselves!) do not work, the effective limiter is the valve stem itself! After fighting the "cover turning" issue on our '66 Newport 14x5.5" wheels, I just took the valve stem extension off the valve stem and installed the wheel cover so the valve stem hole ws not near the valve stem itself. So the cover could rotate to its heart's content.

Only wheel on the Newport that had this issue was the rh frt wheel, even if the tires were rotated. On some fast and hard lh turns, I lost a cover one time. Even after I upgraded to the '66 New Yorker covers.

All things considered, might be time to consider and upgrade to 15" wheels and tires. Something along the lines of 15x6 '72 Newport steel wheels. 4 of them, so they all match. In consideration of how hard it is getting to be to find good 14" tires any more. Might be easier to find for about the same price as 14s. Then aim for a tire size of about P215/75R-15 so the speedometer stays about as accurate as it now is.

If finances are not a big issue, might save money for the upcoming wheel sales on VN501s at Summit and similar, but some used W23s migiht be of similar pricing, when they appear.

Just some thoughts and experiences,

The 4 nub wheel with a smaller center hole is a Ford wheel. Don't know what cap it takes. I'd get rid on it.

Your 3 nub wheel is a mopar wheel and what you want.

That no nine wheel who knows it's origin.

When you use different year or make of wheels than the car came with they can be slightly different size and caps will fly. Or they can be quite tight to install the caps.

14" tires are easy to find with online retainers, and Walmart has great prices, they ship to store or your house for free.

14" tires won't be in stock at your local tire store because they don't stock slow movers. And they will be expensive if they get you some.

That is great info--- If I am remembering correctly, those 2 weirdo rims could be the ones that were throwing the caps, I really appreciate knowing that the 3 nub rim is the correct stock Mopar rim.

Any thoughts if the correct 3 nub 14" rim takes a 10" dog dish - poverty cap if I decide to go that way?

Gotta remember that there are 10" caps and 9" caps too. The safe bet is '65 and older wheels have the 10" cap. I've read that some applications used a 10" cap up until 1967, but I'm not that familiar. Later 9" cap wheels can be adapted, but that's another subject.

Too bad you're not closer. I could make you a smoking deal on some '66 14 x 6 wheels with almost new tires.

Hey there Big John- I was hoping you would show up. You helped me a lot the last time I was here with my 727 valve body...

I do not want to hijack this thread, but I followed your "driveline vibration" thread, and learned a lot.. Andy Bernbaum parts has a ball and trunion kit for sale... Mine seems to have a little play... not sure how tight the ball and trunion should be compared to a u- joint... Is it ok if I PM you in a day or 2? I have to head to town shortly here...

Hmmm, I kinda might want to see those wheels for fun someday..

Thank you for info on caps... thinking 10" is right but saw the 9" out there so was not sure..
 
Yes 1966-67 B bodies take a 10" dog dish cap. 1968 changed to 9". Can't speak for the other bodies.

There is a Dog dish picture /application chart out there with many mistakes on it.
 
Not to beat a dead horse--- But upon further inspection, the correct 3 nub 14" Mopar steel wheel has these little nubs on the outer rim, I assume to help hold on the full wheel cover..

No wonder I was throwing them off --- It was the 2 bogus rims the whole time.. ( They do not have these nubs. )

Thank goodness now I know what I am looking for--- 2 correct Mopar rims with the exact correct features.

The nubs only address the wheel cover "turning" on the wheel as it flexes, not the other issue related to them leaving.
