440 engine making a noise that sounds like an exhaust leak, but no leak is found

I’m going to level set. Reassemble everything and do a compression check. Then pull the exhaust manifold if compression is ok. Replace oil and go from there

440 engine making a noise that sounds like an exhaust leak, but no leak is found

Oh, also of note, it doesn't smoke either. Also, could a diluted oil cause these symptoms? I believe the oil is diluted with gas (this happened before trying to work the bugs out of the efi system).

440 engine making a noise that sounds like an exhaust leak, but no leak is found

I actually do have a small cam and looked into the cylinder, but didn't see anything crazy. Piston did appear to have 2 bevels or something along the front edge of the piston (towards front of engine) But they seemed more like they were made that way vs damage. I'm not sure what stock 440...

440 engine making a noise that sounds like an exhaust leak, but no leak is found

as a test I repeated my cylinder pressurizing test on #2 cylinder. The air escape was almost inaudible. So #4 is definitely dropping pressure really quickly. I just can't tell from where, not intake, not exhaust, not radiator and not crankcase (that I'm able to discern) Any thoughts before...

440 engine making a noise that sounds like an exhaust leak, but no leak is found

I did something like this. I loosened the rocker shaft to unload the valve springs. pushed air in and it wasn't coming through the intake or exhaust. I assume the slowness was air bypassing the rings

440 engine making a noise that sounds like an exhaust leak, but no leak is found

Ok, so I pushed on the springs while idling (not easy) but the sound didn't change. I couldn't see any movement either.

440 engine making a noise that sounds like an exhaust leak, but no leak is found

I'll give that a shot, what should I be looking for? The springs don't appear broken.

440 engine making a noise that sounds like an exhaust leak, but no leak is found

All the time, hot, cold, idle, driving rpms. Doesn't seem to change at all (other than quicker/slower per rpm)

440 engine making a noise that sounds like an exhaust leak, but no leak is found

Hi all, It's been a long time since I've been on here. My 1975 T&C wagon, stock 440 is giving me trouble. I've spent the last 1.5 years (not a typo) working on a holley efi install. Finally got all my issues resolved and it was finally running right. I took the family on a trip to the...

Has anyone ever won a car show with their C body?

I've had my wagon to numerous local shows, most people just keep on walking. I like the group that remember riding in the 3rd row seat, big family road trips, helping dad load lumber for a home project, those sorts of things. Never won a trophy with it, never expect to, but I always enjoy the...

1975 Wagon, 440 mostly stock charging system not working.

Unfortunately I don’t know. I only know when it’s disconnected the car won’t charge.

I believe you must be right. That got power to my vr and alternator field. Plus it must feed dash lights and low beam headlights too.

Big John! You were 100% correct. I did disconnect something to route my fuel line along the firewall and didn’t reconnect it! I went back through everything and found this, with both plugs disconnected. Thanks again for the help. Turned out to be a loose nut behind the wrench! Lol

1975 Wagon, 440 mostly stock charging system not working.

Ok this all makes sense with what I was expecting. I need to back track to try and figure out why I have no power at either the vr or field wire. Also not sure if it’s related but I don’t currently have low beams or dash lights. So something has definitely changed since last summer. Totally...

1975 Wagon, 440 mostly stock charging system not working.

Ok, then one side of the field would have to be powered, right? Along with one side of the vr. Neither of the field wires have power and neither of the vr wires have power in run.

1975 Wagon, 440 mostly stock charging system not working.

Ok so I’ll give that a try, groundling the green wire field tab. Does the other wire need to be connected still or is it ok if it’s disc as well during this test?

1975 Wagon, 440 mostly stock charging system not working.

My car has what looks like a tan wire from the vr and a dark green wire. The alternator has a violet w/white stripe wire to one field and dark green to the other. Neither the tan on vr nor violet/white stripe on alternator field has power. There’s power at the positive post of the alternator...

1975 Wagon, 440 mostly stock charging system not working.

Hi all, I haven't posted in a while, but I recently upgraded my fuel system to a sniper efi. That all went well, but my charging system is no longer working (it seemed to be working last summer). Here's what I've done so far. Had the alternator tested and repaired (it wasn't charging)...

    Starter cranks in Run position.

Update: I had the afternoon off and decided to try and adjust the ignition switch as stated. That did the trick, thanks for all the info. As I was laying on my back I noticed something. Is there a trim panel that is supposed to be over the passenger side mirror adjustment knob and light?
