The plastic, one-piece shrouds you need to remove the fan. The shroud on my '62 New Yorker was a two-piece, metal thing. You could take it off and put it on without removing the fan.

Tap it with a hammer, if you can get one in there. Or, use a large screwdriver as a wedge, tap down on it. There's a "nipple" the fan sits on; makes it snug.

Does that 727 have a lockup torque converter? I wouldn't do it; I would fix your existing transmission. In addition to all the changes, you said you want to put a big block in in the future. If you do, you will need to swap transmissions again. Why do all that work twice?
