    My 383 teardown w/pics...

Well replaced the t-stat and took it for a spin, temp gauge stayed around 1/3 up where it ought to be... Engine runs better too from not being so hot. Just need to get the choke hooked up properly and it will be good enough to drive every day. 70bigblockdodge the car has a factory-style (but...

    My 383 teardown w/pics...

Drove the car about 10 miles yesterday to my actual home and noticed it was running kinda hot, also when I arrived it seemed to be misfiring a bit but it was hard to tell. Am I correct in that the temp gauge should always stay below 1/2, more around 1/3 up from the cold side? It was running a...

    My 383 teardown w/pics...

Hey guys just wanted to update... The car is completely back together, in fact today I just went and got the alignment done. I added a 1" plastic 4-hole carb spacer for extra torque and a new reproduction "unsilenced" air cleaner from Mancini. The car drives fantastic, that 383 sounds...

    My 383 teardown w/pics...

Just thought I'd share some pics of the 383 4-bbl out of my '69 Polara I recently "overhauled" (new gaskets, timing set, cleaned/painted). The odometer says 99k miles and judging from how the inside of the engine looked I assume it hasn't rolled over... Here's pulling the engine, good friend...

Carter AFB running too rich, but only on one side!

Maybe the idle circuits are a bit dirty? My 383 runs great with only 2 turns (as in 2 full 360* rotations) out on the mixture screws but that is at 6000' elevation... Unscrew the mixture screws all the way out and then spray the holes out with carb cleaner

    Engine Boiled over

This is true, water alone has a lower boiling point than coolant but it holds a lot more heat thus having the ability to cool down your engine better. You can try adding more water to make it like a 60/40 but again if you need to do that for it to work there is something else wrong... You said...

    Engine Boiled over

Be careful before you just throw a cooler t-stat in there, a properly working cooling system shouldn't overheat whether the t-stat is 160 or 195*. It sounds like you might have an airflow problem; if the engine overheats at lower speeds it's usually airflow, at higher speeds usually cooling...

Carter AFB running too rich, but only on one side!

You are on the right track the spec calls for 3/8" distance from the float to the main body when resting (closed) on the needles. This actually lowers the level of fuel in the bowls, what's happening when you turn is the fuel spills out the booster from the level being too high...

Carter AFB running too rich, but only on one side!

Knebel is right the whole idea of a dual-plane intake is to separate each side of the carb to half the cylinders so the vacuum signal is improved. I think you found your problem with the loose intake bolts. The leak from the carb you describe sounds like you have the floats set too high; go...

    E.f.i.

EFI is awesome but if I'm going to spend $2g+ on a fuel system it better be SMPI... If you have a carburetor matched and tuned properly to your engine you won't get anything out of going to EFI besides maybe 1-2 MPG. The real advantage is that it can tune itself on the fly depending on ambient...

    What fuel do you use?

Run the cheapest, lowest octane gas your engine will tolerate without pinging... Premium gas is a bit "cleaner" and if it makes you feel better about your 40-year-old engine staying clean then go ahead but it really isn't doing much. The '69 Polara I just got has a factory 383 4-bbl with 10:1...
