    How does this happen?

Or it could be simply a defect in the steel that lead to breakage under certain conditions. It's a known failure for steel parts. You just need an imperfection, or an inclusion, and that can be the perfect start for a crack, than a breakage. Just my 2 cents.

    What Is Ford Thinking?

Yeah, I think about the same ... But that trend started years ago, when some brands that were recognized as luxury car brands started to make SUV and pickup trucks. Cadillac Escalade ???? Lincoln Navigator ???? WTF !!!

"This must have been on Monday morning built Dodge. No quality control."

It does show that workmanship in the factories at the time was below par. Quality control was indeed nonexistent. They just did not care. The Big Three knew they could get away with it (and it would get worse in the '70s). I always find amusing when people complain about bad workmanship on...

    Lee Iacocca, RIP

I did the same, but in reverse. First the autobiography of Iacocca (in 1985), then the John DeLorean book (in 1996). I agree, it's a great dive in the US automotive industry from the "Golden Years".

    Fun times in FumBuck...

Yes that Citroën SM had a central hydraulic system that powered everything hydraulic, but it was not the first one to do so. The first one was the Citroën DS, introduced in 1955 ! Granted, they were not delivered to customers before 1957 but still ... It even powered the windows.
