1970 Imperial LeBaron 2 door hardtop

I purchased this 1970 Imperial as a rust free project car that had been sitting outside for 20 years in a dry western climate. It had one owner for over 50 years. During the past year I have restored this rare coupe.

General Information

I found two broadcast sheets in the car. It was built on the first day of 1970 model year production, on August 4, 1969 as a code Y13 demonstrator car. It has all options, and was built with the 1969 model hubcaps. (The only thing nicer on a 69 in my option, a perfect situation).

The 70 model is my favorite; no fender skirts, the nicest optional bucket seats, the cleanest grille, the most attractive side trim, and the last Imperial as a free standing make.

The largest post war 2 door car (prior to the less desirable 5 mph bumpers) at 229.7 inches. The top dog Mopar when new.

Comments

That has turned into a very desirable car; I'm loving everything about it! Would you care to share some "before" pictures, and pictures of the restoration process?

Thank you for your comments. I have enclosed more pictures.

I had been looking for a 1970 Imperial LeBaron 2 d ht for quite some time, but they are hard to find. Few were made (1,803) and the survival rate is very low. 440 engine sourcing and demolition derby took many of them back when they were not worth much. I found this car at a ranch in west Texas where it had stayed all of its life. The car was rust free and complete, but rough after spending its last 20 years sitting outside in the Texas sun. It ran rough and for yard drive only. It was all original, except the wheels, but the original wheels and hubcaps were in the trunk.

Being a fully optioned demonstrator car built on day one for the model year, I liked everything about the car, except the DY3 Champagne (beige) color. For personal preference reasons i repainted the car in the 1970 Mopar color EB5 Blue Fire Metallic. Not correct for this car, but that was my choice. I also removed the optional protective side molding, and added the optional black pinstripe. Other than this, everything was restored to factory original.

The optional leather bucket seats were redone correctly, the rest of the interior cleaned up nicely. A new vinyl top was installed, black as it was originally. The engine and drivetrain turned out to be in excellent condition following a major service. The car had 99,100 miles, mostly from a long daily commute on Texas highways. Otherwise mechanical and cosmetic issues were taken care of, and the car now runs and drives excellent. A smooth and quiet ride.

I added it to the Imperial Club Registry, and it is currently the only 1970 Imperial LeBaron 2 d ht in the Registry which contains over 3,500 known existing Imperials. Being used to mostly E and B bodies, it is obvious to see the higher quality that went into building the Imperials. As it should be, they did cost about the same as two 1970 Cudas when new.

Thank you for posting! What a difference !!!

Could you possibly post the fender tag and broadcast sheets?

Thank you for your comments. I have enclosed pictures of the "fender" tag and the Broadcast sheet. (The second Broadcast sheet contains the same information).

Being a Y13 demonstrator car it is loaded with options. As most C body people know, the Imperial LeBaron had many features (that were optional on lesser models) as standard equipment, including power windows (with safety lock out), rim blow steering wheel, vinyl top, misc. lamps, trunk dress up, clock, vacuum parking brake release, 3 speed wipers, full instrumentation with Sentry Signal, power disc brakes, cornering lights etc.

In addition this car has the following extra cost options:

C55 Bucket seats
C61 Passenger seat recliner
C95 Floor mats
C96 Spare tire cover
F13 60 amp alternator
G11 Tinted glass all windows
G31 Right hand outside mirror
H53 Air Condition with Auto Temp
L41 Safeguard Sentinel Lighting
MRX9 Leather seats, black
N88 Automatic Speed Control
P28 Power seats left /right, automatic slide forward on passenger side
P41 Electric door locks
P45 Power trunk lid release
R37 AM/FM Stereo Multiplex radio with stereo tape, 5 speakers and concealed antenna
S61 Tilt-A-Scope steering wheel
U56 Dual Stripe Whitewall tires
V5X Protective vinyl side molding

(Rear AC or Rear Heater were rarely seen in the 2 door cars. The Sunroof was optional starting only in the 1971 model year. The headlight washers were optional only in the 1971 model year.)
