A friend of mine asked me to with them to look at this car. Her brother is the one looking, he lives a few hours away. Don't know much about these, but as usual, the ad does not show many of the issues. It was cold, so it was a bit cranky to start, but it does start/stop. Running lights stay on, the owner said he had the dash apart at one time, so has to disconnect battery. saw alligator clamp on alt housing for a ground to something, gonna be some electrical problems. typical bondo issues, both lower front corners of doors, as well as what you see in pics. Will need need new top, carpet, seats redone, as well as body work. Told them I'd offer $6500, maybe get it for $7000, $7500 tops...thoughts?

RUN AWAY ..... RUN AWAY.
That car has been rode hard and put away wet. Lots of jury rig repairs. And no matter how nice the paint looks it will need to be totally stripped, repaired and refinished....... Then there's the interior and mentioned electrical gremmilins.

I wouldn't even make an offer of any kind..... afraid they'd accept it.

I would bow to Will's expertise but it really doesn't look THAT bad!

Sorry, did I leave something out.....? That car is a one way money pit.
Most of them are and if everybody ran from them there would be less of them around. We don't want that, do we?

Maybe not to you with above average skills but to the average guy who might wash, change plugs, points, oil and filter it is bad. The body work and electrical work should overwhelm most.

Mopar electrical gremlins alone are enough to drive you crazy. That interior looks like it wasn't too cared for either. Satan is in the details....

I bought my first real resto project, a rusty RR rolling chassis and a Miller welder shortly thereafter and began to figure it out with the help of FBBO.

Ah, but you already had two qualifications. One, you had a deep interest in old cars. Two, you already had inherent skills that only needed to be brought out and nurtured. Not everybody has those skills by a long shot. Both my brother and I have them, since young teenagers, with him using his as an occupation and me as a hobby. My father has none of these skills, nor interest, whatsoever.

So don't sell yourself short or be too modest. Leave too modest to .........

I know you're right but whose to know what you're capable of until you try it.
If someone has an interest in delving into a project car I should hope that is a sign of ambition but it'd be a good idea to direct that person to the forums for a peak at what is involved in similar projects.

Exactly...when I restored my Firebird last year, all I had ever done before was patch a dent here or there. Never owned a plasma cutter or welder, took the plunge, wathed some videos and got after it. I've since done my 66 Fury, right now have a buddy's '70 Mustang that needs tail panel replaced, and rear 1/4 patch panels...and by word of mouth, I have a couple more "jobs" folks want me to do. I think more guys have a knack for some of this labor of love than they think....key is "labor of love", if you have the passion, you will find a way to do it...my 2¢

I had several people interested in me doing panel work for them as well and at first I was interested but then thought I might spiral into a place where I would have even less time for my own projects. I also thought it might take some of the fun out of it.

I would only buy it to keep not to potentially fix and sell ... even then you never know when you may have to sell. It will need a lot of work and everything single thing needs to be touched and made nice. I'd say $6,000 - 6,500 tops if this is what he really wants. I've seen some pretty nice 66-67's in the mid $20's for sale that need very little to nothing to be a real nice car.

It doesn't look to bad but there will be some problems but should be fairly solid down there for a convert.

The car is very restorable in capable hands. Once apart it will take up a three car garage, and require several skill levels to bring back. Not to mention a bucket full of money. There are abandoned project cars like this all over, dissalusioned owners, broken dreams, and nice cars that end up being parted out.

These cars are not that rare and spending 20-25K for a nice #2 condition car would be a much wiser investment.

I hate to see another one fall by the wayside but I have to agree with Will on this one. Yes, this car could be restored but not by a novice. Even experience restorers could be upside down on this one very quickly.

It's a 66/67 coronet. There is not as much demand for those as Belvederes.
Finding and restoring convertible specific parts is not easy nor inexpensive.

You could go the Hemi R/T clone route but that won't be cheap either.

Complete paint and body - $10K minimum. Compete interior restore - $4K, including seat foam. A grand for the top, another $350 for the boot. Cosmetic details - $3K - $5K. Transport to get it delivered - $1,200, give or take. That alone is over $22K, plus the purchase price of the car, which I'd give around $5K, just from the few pics there...of course, this assumes it runs great and stops on a dime as-is.

We do it for the love, not everyone does it for value......

True Dave, but it never hurts to apply some good common sense. I haven't heard anyone express any real passion about this car. Just "it's a Coronet convertible".
Sorry but it's not worth anywhere near the asking price.
