The story of my car (with poetic license)

In 1968, Dr. Herbert Fritz in Decatur, IL purchased a Fury III convertible in white with black interior, and special order GREEN top. 383 2bbl Commando. His wife drove it for many years, the family enjoyed it. As they got older, and their sons grew and went to start their own lives, it was decided that the fury should be sold.

One of the sons took it instead of it being sold and moved it to the Atlanta, GA area where he decided to store it indoors with a "friend". The "Friend" didn't store it indoors, and when the son went back to retrieve the car it hadn't been stored indoors at all, and the condition was decidedly worse than when he'd stored it in the first place. So he sold the car.

The car passed through two or three more hands, someone broke the idle screws off in the carb, and the car probably wouldn't start or run very well (ask how I know...but that's jumping ahead). One of those hands the car was passed to owned a restoration shop that has since closed. At that same restoration shop was a 1971 GTX...mine. The GTX was due to be painted, and with substantial deposit in hand, the shop owner did pretty much everything BUT paint my GTX, yet was happy to spend/lose my money. His divorce and a bankruptcy later, my money was pretty much gone, except for the fact that I had a receipt from the original transaction with both our signatures, deposit amount, and a stated "I will paint the car". Okay....see you in court...

But....I'm a good guy. The threat of court didn't sit well with the shop owner, so he says "Remember that fury convertible I had?"

Me: "yeah..."

Him: "Would you take it instead of cash?"

Me: "I prefer cash..."

Him: "But i'm bankrupt..."

Me: "Something is better than nothing..."

So we go and see the fury....

and it's really not all that bad....dirty, needs a top, neglected...I've bought worse....so we deal, and it comes to me....and I clean it up........MORE TO COME....

part II

so I get the car, and it's in the shape you see it on the wrecker...hmmm...thought it was better than this. A good look underneath says it's got surface rust, but it's not going to break in half any time soon, the bones are pretty good. it's just FILTHY....

IMG_3058.jpgIMG_3059.jpg

yes....FILTHY!!!!!!!!

IMG_3056.jpg

so I clean it up as much as I can, pull the nasty carpet out, save the OE rubber mat which looks nearly new, and start searching for parts.

While i'm searching for parts, I find out the trunk has never been opened...no keys. (insert part where I find a suitcase full of money)...yeah...didn't happen. I DID find paperwork to another car belonging to the son, so with a little internet detective work, I found him (he's a doctor too), and called his office. I left a message with his receptionist, and he called me back that afternoon and we chatted for 30 minutes and I got the whole history. He was THRILLED someone was finally putting it back together, and seemed to be a pretty nice guy.

So anyway...i'll be posting again with the "trying to get it started saga".

I'm debating on original versus mild custom...I guess it depends on what happens with some of the rust fixing I have to do.

I found a pretty good color match to the top at topsdown.com Their OE07 is a pretty good match, it's just pinpoint vinyl, not grained like the original...

more cleaning this weekend...i'm going to tackle the top well and tonneau.

Great story but I'm still sorry to hear about the X, what became of it?

Great story but I'm still sorry to hear about the X, what became of it?

It's at another paint shop. It came home a month before the fury showed up, I cut another deal, and it might really, truly get painted this time. I've been waiting 4 years....I've got nearly everything restored except the engine and interior. It'll practically bolt back together when it gets here.

THE GTX...for the curious... https://plus.google.com/photos/111609703238637837036/albums/5360721519667567617

It's a tawny gold GY9, non matching 440-4 car, i'm building a light custom. disk brakes, 17" year one rallyes, probably TBI (throttle body injection), .030 over, forged crank...deleted the vinyl top, side molding and wheel trims. the bumpers are powdercoated, not chromed.

Not much new to report.

The car won't start. I made a thread in engine describing the problem. The right front tire exploded on its own. I found a set of 15" wheels, and will be putting a new set of tires on...kinda the plan all along.

IT STARTED!! Finally...man, this one was finicky...clearly a compression problem as there was a bunch of blowby until everything got freed up and seated again...

It's got new lifters, there was a bent pushrod in #7. it's got a new carb, and a cleaned up top end.

It needs a cooling system overhaul, it needs a fuel system overhaul, it needs a brake system overhaul....lol. nothing like a car that's been sitting....

Good job! You'll have it roadworthy in no time. Do you have any ne pictures to post?

No, nothing of consequence. it doesn't look much different. I'll post some when I get the wheels and tires on it.

Congrats on getting it freed up and running!

It starts great, it runs strong, need to set the timing, 3 of 4 brakes are new, new master...

it moved around my driveway on its own tonight. I need to get it into the garage in a week...the 'quality of life' police gave me a junk car violation warning. Wtf. I just wish they'd ticket the kid with the freaking dirt bike and no helmet that did laps around the neighborhood.

tucked away from the quality of life police. I knew a 25 ft deep garage would come in handy...

Yes it does................ and good to hear about progress!!

got the tag today! I'm legal!!

I had to have the police out for a VIN check, because the first time I went to the DMV, the seller wasn't the owner of record). that went very smooth, because somehow the VIN came back with me being the owner of the vehicle. The police looked very confused, and I was like "beats me?". I got to the DMV today to pay my tag transfer fee, and the girl there looked at her screen, and said..."you already own the car"...ummm what?. 5 bucks later, and I transferred the tag from a sold car to the fury. I'm good to go.

I can't tell you how excited I am to have resurrected another car.
