440 HP? I would need to see more pictures plus the fender tag.

Or, is this a case where the car has a 440, therefore, it's an HP motor? I ran my Newport at Famoso a few times. On the registration for what the motor was I always put 440. There is a video of me running there and you can clearly hear the announcer say, "And he's running a 440 Magnum motor." I never, or ever, have written that description.

Here it is - I get dusted by the Dodge Diesel. The opening shots are when I first got the car and had the front and rear valances repaired as they were quite bent. My Buddy Steve, who did the filming, was having his 300 Hurst fully restored at the same shop.

Gents, I am debating driving the 200 miles to look at this. The owner says it has a soft brake pedal. What do you think a good price for this? I don't think I would pay more than $5000. It just has a 440 in it. You can see that in the pictures, but no fender tag. Too bad UHAUL is getting so picky in its trailer rentals. My Cadillac Escalade cannot tow it back on a UHAUL trailer. Getting it back to Sioux Falls is problematic. Oh well!

I'd say five grand is a fair offer.

Needs some brake repairs
When you find out after buying the car that it needs an unobtanium booster, new M/C, lines, hoses, rotors, calipers, pads, drums, and shoes, you'll curse yourself that you fell hook line and sinker for the "needs some repairs" line.
I never trust people when they dismiss lightly anything that needs attending to.
Like the A/C" probably needs a charge". Boolchit.

Tell the U-Haul guys yer gonna tow a 68 Dodge Dart. . .

I've pulled a 73 Newport on a U-Haul trailer and it was really kissing the limits.
I don't know if an Imp over that long a distance will be the straw that breaks the camel's back.

And yes, that Newport was on paper a '67 Dart. Initially the U-H 'puter even rejected that before "upgrading" my F150 to an (ahem, cough, cough) F250...

I towed my Newport from Parumph, NV, to Bakersfield with my B250 Dodge van. Car was a little heavy but we made it fine.

As for the "soft brakes," when my buddy bought his 300 Hurst, it, too, had "soft brakes." The problem turned out to be rusted brake lines that literally popped on me when I was driving the car after rebuilding the carb. That was a fun ride, if you can hear my sarcasm. Be wary!

That's a pretty cool car, I like it. Weird that the fender tag would be missing on something like that. Maybe he just misunderstood the question as it is probably on the rad support.

I also get a kick on some of the comments here, the car has been off the road for 12 years and its a 43 year old car. Yeah I would expect to spend between $1000 and $2000 getting it sorted out and roadworthly. That's just the way it goes. You figure at the very least you are going through the fuel and braking systems, new tires, tune-up, hoses, battery...then you may have to look at some other stuff like axle seals after you get a few miles on it.

I'd be more concerned with the sheetmetal and engine.

Good luck, from the pics the price sure doesn't look out of line to me at all but of course cheaper is always better.

I pulled a '74 Imperial on a UHAUL trailer with a '99 Surburban and I could only maintain about 45 mph as the trailer wanted to "dog walk" at speeds above that. I reloaded the car a couple of times trying the change the balance but to no avail. I have since discovered that UHAUL makes two size car carriers and would recommend you make sure you have the higher weight rated trailer.

That Imperial might be too long for the uHaul trailer.
I had a 69 Polara on their 15 foot trailer and it barely fit with the wheel base of 122" and a total length of 220.8'. The Imperial is 127" on the wheel base and the front and rear overhang is much longer, with a total length of 235.3"
My 1500 Cheby pulled it ok though.

I don't believe anyone makes the rotors either. I drive my 72 sparingly knowing this.

I wouldn't worry about the u-haul trailer as long as it's a newer one. The trailer used by SixPkRT is one of the older trailers, they were smaller. U-Haul mentions this when discussing the width dimensions below. Your Escalade may whine about it though because often the towing capabilities of Lux SUV's is surprisingly low. I towed my 69 Fury......or as I told U-Haul, a 2002 Jeep Liberty....and it loaded and road fine. You can tell the newer trailers because they are almost all silver. The pic I have isn't that great but you can see the trailer looks different. Also the specs from U-Haul's website outline the max dimensions of the towed vehicle and the Imperial should fit with no problem.

I told them I was towing a K-car.

I towed a Formal from Ohio to Maryland on a U-Haul trailer on the back of my Titan through the mountains. No problem what-so-ever. I had to look in the mirrors to make sure I was still towing the Formal and trailer....

Thanks guys, Yes the UHaul guys get pretty picky. I tried to tow my 09 Lincoln MKX (smallest SUV) and after looking at the truck and hitch, they would not rent me the trailer. I then rented the silly tow dolly. Yes, the brake lines, hoses, fuel lines and all that good stuff. I had to do that to get my 78 New Yorker ready. I still have to replace the fuel tank and yank the lean burn, replace the headliner and then paint. I may try to slip out tomorrow and look at it and take a picture of the fender tag if I do not buy it. Great thread about every one and their trailer experiences! Cool!

I've got a 73 four door, same burnished red with white leather. Lol would be a great twin to mine! I got mine in Atlantic city and drove it 6 hours home. Was stored for 14 years. Though the po did do some work on it and drive it a little for a couple of summers prior to me getting it. Good luck and hope it works out for you. I love mine, even with the touchy auto temp 2.
