My guess is headlight switch. Without relays a lot of juice goes through them.

Shunt type ammeter, so it doesn't flow as much current through the ammeter.

There's a lot of wiring in those dashes... anything could have happened. Lot's of times I see ad-on wiring that is a fire waiting to happen.
