1978 Chrysler New Yorker

1978 Chrysler New Yorker. Last year of the BIG cars, 19+ feet of Detroit steel. Garage stored for the past 18 years. Triple blue; blue paint, blue vinyl top, blue velour interior. 35,500 actual miles. 400 CI engine, fender skirts, power everything and a FACTORY 8 track tape player! All the chrome is good. Fresh oil change, engine runs nice. Needs very little to be perfect. Right front fender was repainted, could use it again. Head liner is drooping and exhaust is fine now but it has been parked for years. This was my father-in-law's Sunday go to meeting car. Located in Bethlehem. Contact me with any questions.

I didn't post the three '78 Formals I found on CL where the ads said the wipers weren't working. lol.

If the air is working, I thought Dave might be interested if he could jawbone the guy down to 25 hundred.

Even the door panel are different on this one compared to mine. Mine have leather/vinyl where the fur is on the door panels.

And you can peel off the BSM!

I sometimes think the BSM switched to the stick on style in late '78. I know Darts eventually went this route.

Slight doorpanel differences for the velour interiors were another 1978-only change, along with some radios, delay wipers, body stripe style, grille and a few more.

In hindsight, they should have run these another year and worked the bugs out of the R-bodies. They certainly didn't need the Jefferson Ave plant to build Ramchargers for one year! Then pull out all that tooling to build K-cars in '81!

There were a lot of other 1978 only changes that would indicate that maybe Chrysler was going to continue C-Body production. The 78's had thinner side glass, the door panel's were also constructed with different material beside the mentioned velour (no metal in the door handle area and thinner panels) all in effort to reduce weight for the 78 C-s. That effort reduced the weight of the car by 7 lbs. Why Chrysler changed the wiper cam for 78 only is still a mystery. The all new fuse panel that folds down and is easier to work on (that Chrysler claims the mechanics loved). NYB body colored script decals (Chrysler) on the side view mirrors and door handles. Silver highlights on the NYB tailights, lockup torque converter (78 NYB & Newport are the only big block C's with a lockup converter). Digital clock. New radio's. and I'm forgetting the rest....

There were a bunch of changes and plans to run the '79 model year. At the last minute I think someone concluded there was more money to be made selling SUVS, so let's rush the R-bodies into production. And then came the second oil shock. Tear out the SUV tooling and replace it with K-cars.

If you make money, your company is called "nimble, fast-on-its-feet" if you lose money, you're called "disorganized, lacking direction".

I wish Chrysler would of offered a Formal convertible....
