Arrival today (btw, this was a nice truck)

Couple things ..

1. it really looks better in person than in photos (if you follow me .. looks like its got 10 coats of paint on it to the naked eye -- it doesnt, but for an older paint job it looks almost new)

2. its one of the fastest C-bodies (including the cop cars) I have ever driven. a "luxo barge" with sportscar giddy-up. Six-speed automatic, in essence due to the GV set up, with the dialed-up 440 R/B's torque efficiently getting to the rear wheels with less RPM falloff.

My plans? 1 inch white-walls. Keep the GV? for a while -- damn thing is just so much frickin' fun i gotta figure out (keeping shiny side up) its limits.

It isnt suspended or treaded for what it can obviously do -- so some of its limits are readily apparent (took a curve a little fast and she wallowed around a bit, steering was a bit loose, etc) unless I change that -- no plans to do so tho.

btw -- Kip sent me pics of the sunroof job .. i will post over this weekend sometime. That was really well done as @marko pointed out in the closed thread.

Kip did a good job with this car .. i thank (thanked) him for letting me caretake her for a while.

440 dual-carbed thumper now, soon to be 3:55 SG (thanks to detmatt) -- Salon doesn't seem like the "right" car (too nice) while my Newp has a lotta mods (plus its loud, lopey cam, etc.) already.

I am willing to experiment on wheels/tires/suspension mods too to have more fun with a six-speed auto C-body

Donor SUnroof Car -- drilled out welds at A and C pillar

Salon: Same procedure, drilled out NON sunroof, took out all glass and seats, epoxy primered everything (car will probably never rust, under vinly or otherwise) including floors/doors/jambs, and put her all back together.

I used TFX twice. Once from Danville, CA with my 300, and once from Phoenix with the wagon. Good job on both moves. Sorry for the hijack.

Agreed, and it's all company equipment and company drivers. That can make all the difference.

FWIW i'd go with the 1.6 " wider white wall that was part of the Salon package but im prob biased......
(the 2nd pic is my 2nd s/r salon that had the silver roof dyed burgundy)

a bit of info on the transport.

yes, it took a month to get the car after Kip and I closed the deal. Kip had car totally ready to go -- but he also had a long planned vacation before I could get a transporter confirmed .. this added 20 days to the process.

Anyway, I was hunting around for transporters/customs folks. called three, one no-quoted on the pickup (wouldnt go hour north of Toronto to pick it up ) the other two were Mackie and TFX.

Mackie quoted a number 2x the TFX quote. I wanted "open" transport .. neither one would do that -- just enclosed. The charge to do the paperwork to cross was $250 USD for both of them. The distance to move was the same 340 miles.

I aint dissin' Mackie. they just werent competitive for this job.

As pointed out tho, TFX is a first-class outfit in every respect. Pricey to me (i could move a car across the USA for what I paid for this job, including the customs fees), but "ya get what ya pay for" if you want it done right.

Engine wasn't dynoed but based on parts list/machining, Kip estimated 400 HP. Thats really easy to get outta 440 with minimal mods (heads are old-school 915's with mild work done, compression is up given piston choice, etc)

Seat of pants feeling, tho my a** is experienced in such matters, I can only confirm it feel's like 400-HP to me. So definitely no longer a "smog motor", she's got a pretty stout mill and plenty of characteristic R/B torque.

Rear ratio is 3.21 SG. With the Gear Vendors table below (using the 3.23 column as a proxy), you can see the six effective gearing ratios with a standard TorqueFLite yielding final over-drive of 2.51:1 (3.21 x 0.78).

all 78 new yorkers were made in detroit ( jefferson) for the canadian market.
a previous owner dyed the silver roof burgundy, all salons were silver top and bottom on the outside.
the only differences for canada that i can tell are the metric speedo and canadian cars didnt get the front bumper outer corner rubber tips

As the owner of a sunroof car, 77 NYB, I very much appreciate your breakdown and pictures of what you’ve done to your 78, that gives me insight on mine without having to tear her apart. Keep them coming and thanks again.
