Morning Stan,
These are not bad little cars for what they are. My son had a 2002 four door, (the two door, and four door are completely different bodies), it was a very nice car for its age.

I bought a 2001 Stratus R/T 5 speed new back then. Was a fun car to drive with a few issues. The two things I hated was the turning radius, you couldn't make a u turn across a 4 lane highway! And the visibility looking out of the car in all directions was bad. Got rear ended on the freeway and after $14,000 worth of repair I traded it in on a 2003 Dodge truck.

I know that the 3.0's start to leak with mileage and I believe the valve guides start to wear and the motor starts to burn oil. Please correct if wrong. I like these cars especially with the stick. The Chrysler Sebring is also neat with the stick. If this car was closer I would be giving it a serious look, great run around/weekend driver car.

Without doing any research, it looks like the same engine as the non turbocharged Stealth R/T and 3000GT, with the exception that it's installed 180 degrees opposite. If so, those engines have always been good to me, 225hp from the factory.

I think the valve guide oil consumption was an issue with the 3.0 in early production and was corrected after a few years

Frontend's been repainted. And that rust between the sheet metal on the passenger shock tower and inner fender where they overlap.

1. Why?
2. 100% Mitsubishi, again why?
3. 5 speed is fun but no turbo.
4. If your asking you have apparently never been choked out by a mini-van belching smoke and steam out the tailpipe at a light in front of you.

1. Why?
Truthfully, I have no idea except I need to. This may change tomorrow

Wouldn't feel one iota of guilt beating the crap out of it.
3. 5 speed is fun but no turbo.
Turbos on ebay for $29.95 free shipping.

I'd be more worried being beside a Swift truck.

Well....the 5 speed is definitely better than the Auto in these cars. We were replacing trannys left and right back in the day as no one understood how to apply the brakes and come to a stop before engaging reverse. With all the snow pilots we have jamming forward then reverse to get unstuck we kept the transmission tech busy each winter. I prefer the Avenger look myself from these years. Still all in all I had many customers love these cars and put many many miles on them. Chrysler and Mitsu had a good thing going back then.

I think the issue with the valve guides started on the 2.6L V-6? The valve guides were not integral to the head casting, so they'd "drop" and then the oil consumption would start. Cyl heads were replaced, then Chry put out a TSB to put a groove in the guide, then put an E-clip into that groove. A "travel limited" for the guide to not drop any farther.

I rented a Stratus 4cyl one time. Pretty impressed as it was just a tad smaller than the V-6 in displacement. Much better fuel economy. Ran decent. First one of those cars I drove that averaged over 30mpg. A little quiver at idle, even with the balance shaft. BUT . . . big differences in the cost of engine electrics between the 4cyl and V-6!! Reason? The V-6 had Mitsu items and the 4cyl had Chrylser items. 4cyl stuff was much less expensive (starter, alt, etc.). I'd take a Stratus 4cyl for a daily car, with the automatic. (easier to changer atf than to replace clutches and such)

Neons were neat, too! As a turbo/intercooled PT Cruiser might be, too.

Chrysler had some NEAT stuff back then! Even if the front wheels laid rubber.

I've driven many 2000-2005 Mitsubishi eclipse's all gt witch makes them 3.0 v6 and I always get the stick! So I have alot of experience so firstly!
Not mine but a friend s 3.0 eclipse 50 shot n.o.s. NO GOOD ! Motor blew
The motor is not able to take a turbo the way it is ether the comp is way to high ,so no turbo ether!
Now big power adders for on the cheap that work ! Headers ,cold air intake(check the stock air box as there's a valve inside that tends to get stuck cuts h.p.) cold air will by pass this problem. Loose the cat loose the muffler add a flow master it sounds good trust me!
Depending on how much more go you want plugs wires coils injectors cams port polish heads why there off .sadly these little motors can't do much there 205 HP from the factory in the Mitsubishi I'd assume there close in the dodge . If you do just the blot on things you might gain 30-40 HP these motors can't breath once you get them breathing you'll be happy ! If you decide to pass let me know I might go take a look it's a little button a ride 2.5 or so but my cousin's kid needs a car and he wants a mopar!
