Just picked up a pair of 346 Heads, need to be redone but in great shape, no rust or damaged threads. Will these work ok on my chrysler 383 with an upgraded cam with a .480 lift: it's a comp cams 268H XE. Another question I have is should I use the edelbrock intake bolts with the performer rpm intake, just want to have the proper length bolts this time, thinking thats why the heads cracked where the intake bolts on. I am figuring it will cost around $600 for the heads to be redone and assembled.

Yea I was reading the article from mopar magazine and they are not far off from the others. The only 346 heads that they say to stay away from are the smog ones made in late 71 72, the number has 345 at the end instead of 346 which mine do not have the 345,

Pretty much all big block heads from the 906s on all flow about the same and can be ported similarly with your eyes you can look at core shift some of them are pretty bad how much it will effect with that cam, not much but if you have a choice. What exactly was problem with bolts, just looking for some education. Thanks good luck.

I am curious, are you saying the bolts for the intake were too long or too short before?

Yea the stock bolt length with the rpm manifold which is much thicker than the old cast iron one, didn't know if they were too short and when torquing them down if it cause too much stress on that area of the head. It was only one spot the others were fine or it could be that it got too hot while breaking in I don't know at this point, just trying to avoid this happening again.

You are right in saying they all flow the same. I believe Mopar Muscle mag (forget what issue it was),did flow tests and they all were about the same.
If your motor has the Quench Dome pistons you can only use the open chamber 906 or later heads. If you have flat top pistons then you can use the Closed Chamber '67 915 or the Open Chamber '68 to 78 heads (906, 452, ect.).

Well I took the heads off today, looks like they put flat top pistons in the block .30. So the 346 should be fine then?

Yea I am happy seeing how much work was done to this motor before I bought it the guy said he spent $3000 rebuilding the motor, just need to figure out what head gasket to use, I was looking at the fel pro pt1 permatorque gaskets, not sure which I should use.

When you have those heads reworked make sure that you get them resurfaced as part of that rebuild or it won't matter which head gasket you stick in there or it'll still blow the gasket out and then you've got real issues. And those issues will be there to greet you before you can get it off to the side of the road! Jer

Yea they are doing everything I told them resurface guides valve job magnaflux first of course etc...
