I have a 400 from a 78 newyorker wondering about what cam would be good candidate for everyday cruiser

For an "everyday cruiser", the stock cam is fine for that. A little bit more lift and duration than the earlier 256/260 4bbl cam, to help compensate for the lower compression ratio. With a heavy car, you need TORQUE more than horsepower, anyway. Torque is what sets you back in the seat, horsepower happens at the top of each gear just before the trans shifts by itself.

Of course, there are "more cam" cams, but you might be best served by getting the compression ratio up to about 9.0 or so with some closed chamber heads (and the 1.74" exhaust valves installed in them). Dual exhausts can help, too. Going to a 600cfm Edelbrock (either AFB or AVS) carb on their normal dual-plane intake can help, too.

UNLIKE GM or Ford, Chrysler didn't really change their cam specs downward, but kept them pretty much as they'd been, just a hair "more" to help flow more air to help compensate for the power lost with the 8.2 compression ratio. They were still "performance oriented engines" rather than just "low compression" motors.
