440 deiseling after shut off

After turning the key off my 440 backfires and stumbles for 3 seconds and then stops. I know the engine has carburetor issues, but I believe that the distributor is worn out. It has quite a bit of play back and forth if I check by taking the cap off and wiggling the shaft back and forth. Is there actually a test I can perform to check for play?

check your Idle speed, and your timing. If it is too advanced, the engine will do what you are observing. Plug up the vacuum hose to the distributer, and see if anything changes.
