I have a 1978 440 motor here and the pad reads "8T 440 EHP". My best guess is the 8t is for 1978 and the EHP is for cast crank high performance? Anyone got a firm idea on this?

8T = 1978 (All 440's in 1978 were stamped 8T)

E = Cast Crank (All 1978 440's had cast cranks)

HP = High Performance

It is amazing what you can find on the Internet .Would have made things easier thirty years ago.. ..

Can't argue with that!

Hmm being a HP motor i guess it may be an ex cop car engine? i think I need to see if there is a VIN stamped in this thing now huh.

Some did.......

Mike (Newp) has a 1977 440 HP motor and it came out of a 1977 New Yorker.

Here's little more info for the engine pad ID........

The following 440 casting #s from Don Taylor's book Big Block Mopar Engines
Casting # CID Year
"2536430" 440 66-72
"3698830-440" 440 73-78
"4006630-440" 440 78

Has anyone seen an 8T engine with a 78 cast date......? A source told me there were no 440 castings in 78.... The 8T engines were carried over...

i think mine is a 78 casting eh? i will definitely check that out tomorrow.

On another note I found the number stamped into the pad in the side, it isnt a full VIN so I doubt i will ever trace what it came out of, the number is FA 223108.
I also found that the 452 heads have double valve springs in them too, this is a complete long motor and i am now contemplating selling it to help fund the projects. Would it be worth 400 bucks? It probably needs reringing and bearings etc, its all greased up and dirty right now and the heads are off.

The last 'B-RB' wedge headed engine was produced in August 1978, ending the history of Chrysler Corporation big-block engines,

Sitting in my garage as we speak. I finally looked at it a few minutes ago. LMFAO!
