Hi guys. when I went to the shop to get my new rims a tires on the other day the owner Jon asked if I was interested in purchasing a complete 72 440, less carb. It will need a rebuild and he wants $300. What do you guys think? I know it has the steel crank. It is a low compression motor, but that doesn't matter.

Thanks guys. It needs an entire rebuild.

Nice score! A no brainer at that price!

I just picked up a 1975 440 for $300. Engine is clean and has a documented 56k on it. It does have a cast crank though. It's an RB engine. Don't know much about Dodge engines. How does the RB compair to the B series engine? Are aftermarket parts easier to get for one compaired to the other? I know the manifolds are different and I'd like to get an aluminum one.

RB simply means its a raised block, a higher deck than a 383 or 400 motor so the inlet manifolds are the only main difference, plus the valley cover, little stuff like the distributor is not interchangeable, but other than that, total interchangeability.

Can we get a closer look at that crank? It looks like it may be a cast unit? wheres the harmonic ballancer?

The alternator bracket is from the cast crank era also. But it shouldn't be orange.
Regardless, any 440 is worth $300 so no biggy.
Let's get the casting number off those heads while we're at it.

I'll be going over his house to look at it and take some pictures of it,..I hope today. I'll document all the numbers as well and post everything here.

Buy it its a forged crank (counterweights are rounded, cast are very square) former intake is a cool old piece.

Ok, just got back from his house. It's a steel crank H 440 1972 with 452 heads. Like I said, needs a total rebuild. I'll be sending the block out to a local machine shop (IDM) to have them do the work. The person who owns the 440 is a bud of mine that owns an auto shop here in my town, so we agreed on $200 for the engine. Here are some close up pics of the engine numbers. It looks in really good shape.

Yeah, picking it up this weekend. Yeah the 452 heads a pretty good really. They're 76-78 heads with flame inducted hardened exhaust valve seats. Good heads until the Edelbrocks came out around 2001.
