64 newport engine side heater box

Might be a stupid question...but can the engine side heater box be removed without disconnecting anything? Do the coolant hoses have to come off? I really just want to pull it away from the firewall enough to clean the crud out. Service manual doesn't have good pictures or procedures for this (I can't tell if it's talking about the inner or outer box in the procedures for the heater box removals).

I'd disconnect the hoses, open it up to see what's in there, and report back....that way we all can learn without you having to risk breaking your heater core with an untested cheat.
