Hi all. Need a 727 expert over here. Have a 65 300L that's been sitting for a decade. Reverse works fine. From a dead stop I can put it in D and I get whirring and slipping. Same in 2. Pull it into first the noise goes away and the trans engages. Once rolling I can shift into drive and everything is fine. Come to a near stop and the whirring comes back and the trans slips until I put back into first and get rolling again. I'm assuming its a pressure issue, the rear pump helps overcome when rolling, but I know next to nothing when it comes to automatic trannys right now. So my question is, does it sound like I need a overhaul, or is there a band adjustment or maybe filter swap needed? If it sounds like the trans is dusted should I just put aside and get a later 727 trans/converter with part throttle kick down and the Imperial Services adapter kit until I can get a 518 ready to go in???

Did you check the fluid? It sounds like low fluid.

Check it in neutral with the engine running.

Fluid is a tad high with the motor warmed up. When I first got it started, in neutral, there was nothing but a splash of foam on the stick. I had to add 5 quarts. It's really clean right now, I do not see any contaminates on the dip stick, but I have not dropped the pan yet and have only limped up and down the block so far. The rear seal leaks like crazy though, but that's a easy fix.

I've been reading through this article, but without lots of pictures and a pointy stick I have a difficult time until I physically tear something down: http://www.allpar.com/mopar/transmissions/torqueflite-tom-hand.html. My main goal right now is get her reliable enough for around town running and more importantly down to the DMV across town for a VIN inspection while my temp operating permit is still valid. If it's not a simple fix, then that's OK, a temp swap it will be. :)

The first thing I would do is not drive it any longer until you pull the pan down to see whats in it. It could be just a real dirty filter not allowing the fluid to pump. While you're in there,.pull the inspection plate down and see if it has a drain for the converter. If so, drain it. Fill it back up with good Type F fluid. If you still have the issue,.get it serviced.

Just for the future,.always start the car in park and then right away put it in neutral and leave it in neutral for about 15/20 seconds and put it back in park.

I have to do this with my 96 dodge or it doesn't want to go into gear! Drain back because the check valve had been taken out.

My 03 Ram does the same thing. Trans has never been out of the truck, though it has been serviced a few times.

Yeah,.it really helps with these old cars. I do it every time and been doing it that way since the 70's for all my Mopars. .

I know with my 65 sometimes I have to put it in neutral for a few second to get it to go into reverse. I have had the bands adjusted and the cable to. Just seems to be what it likes

Always put it from park to neutral before putting it into gear for 15 to 20 seconds or more. Just the way it is with TF's. Even if your TF doesn't do that, it's always good practice to do the neutral thing before going anywhere. I've been doing it this way for years, and never had an issue.

No outcome yet. Ive hit a rough spot at the moment and have posted the car on craigs, haven't touched the poor girl in over a week now. Im hoping the problems I am dealing with are resolved asap so I do not have to sell. Hopefully things work out, and I will drop the pan and see what is going on, then report back. ;)

I saw this on Craigslist a few days ago and it caught my eye. You only say it runs, drives and stops. Have to say extremely tempted however a car that doesn't want to shift into drive can be a PIA to deal with since it can't move around much when you need it to move around. That would make things tough for me but if it moved I would be down to take a look for sure.

I'm sorry to hear you're selling it. I hope it all works out for you. Keep us posted.

Will do! I have all my toys posted, but watercraft and dirt bikes are kind of hard to sell right now, and the darned Chrysler is getting all the attention from Nevada to Washington. I'm dropping prices on everything else though, I do not want to see her go. At night I have been thinking about her, and when things clear up I'd like to find a 71 or later part throttle kick down 727 and use the Imperial services adapter bracket so I can keep the stock shifter/console. Then stick the original trans next to the original motor for safe keeping. ;)

its a vague ad, and overpriced. Want to keep the vultures away, and keep the wifey thinking I'm pushing hard to sell her, which I do not. Just need a little more time hopefully.
