67 Fury wagon power steering pump

Been a while since I've last visited. Doing A body stuff lately. Now I'm getting my wife's 67 Fury wagon ready for the season and discovered the power steering pump is leaking. It's the round Federal style. I'm looking on Rock auto and Ebay and it seems like there are a few aftermarket pumps out there. Cardone, BBB etc. Looking at the pics they don't exactly look the same. Anyone buy one of these and was there any issues? I'll also get a new hose and pressure line. Thanks.

Mancini and some others have kits to install the later Saginaw pump (thinner oval neck and smaller cap on top) in the place of the earlier pumps (round necks and larger caps on top). Bolt-on as the Saginaw pumps started in 1969 as OEM on Chrysler engines.

Might be able to re-seal your pump. Especially if the fluid is coming out from around the reservoir can (which is a big o-ring type seal). Might be problematic if the fluid is coming out from the shaft behind the pulley (which can mean the existing seal has worn a groove into the shaft, like a front crankshaft seal can do). I'm not aware of any similar "sleeves" for the power steering pump shaft, though.

Your judgment call. DO make sure you have Chrysler-spec power steering fluid in the system. Every car I have had which came with "red atf" in the system had seeps. Putting the OEM-spec Chrysler/GM fluid in the system stopped them. Just my experiences.

The best long-term fix might be to do the upgrade. The re-seal can be variable, to me. Your judgment call. Using the correct fluid in any case.

What engine size?

Most likely a TRW pump. They like to leak at the o-ring between the can and pump. Clean it up and find the leak first. Could be a nightmare trying to swap to a different pump.

If anything, I just want to get a replacement and be done with it. I'm up to my ears in other projects. Thanks
 
If it was only that easy. The best fitting pump is the one already on there. Good luck on the hunt.
 
Resealing the pump is fairly easy. The toughest part is getting the pulley off to replace the seal behind it; the O'Reilley's etc. of the world will rent the special tool. To get it back on heat the pulley center with a plumbers torch and it will drop right on (or it did for me).

Another question. Are the steering boxes the same? Would I just be able to convert to the newer Saginaw pump and bracket without replacing the steering box? Just seeing if I can upgrade since the Saginaw is easier to come by.
 
Yes, pump and related mounting hardware only. All the steering box knows is that it is receiving pressure from a pump. Full kits exist. Mancini and similar.
 
What's the difference between the big block and small block pump? Is it just the bracket and pulley size or is the alignment totally different?
Have you read the Chrysler factory service manual in this respect?

I fully suspect it is in the engine block-specific bracketry more than anything else.

I just looked through it and it doesn't show an answer to my question. Basically how to rebuild it. Nothing about small block and big block mounting.

Then you might need to download the appropriate Chrysler Parts Manual, too. Illustrations and exploded views can answer many questions.
