Hello everyone,
I would like to find out if the color of this particular car is an original shade. The body tag shows the body color code 441 or 44-1, which according to some sources should be:

13534
Bright Turquoise Poly.
*44-1

I am attaching a photo of the car and the body tag.

Thank you!

In the car paint realm of things, "poly" is their designation for "metallic".

You can probably find the paint chip page in the Library at www.hamtramck-historical.com (might have to manually input that address). Plus at the TCPGlobal paint website.

I believe that's a "Spring Special" color, along with the turquoise and white interior.

The car appears to be in very good condition overall, at least from the outside, as I haven't had a look underneath. The interior is OK, except for a cracked dashboard and a worn steering wheel. Also, from a certain angle, it seems that the front seat cushions have been reupholstered; the color shade is slightly different. What is your opinion? Thank you

The car looks very nice in the photos. The vinyl top appears to have the correct grain, and could be original. Chrysler's vinyl seats in the 1960's usually started splitting at the seams by the time a car had 50K miles on it, so if you don't have any splits, it's likely the seats have been redone.

The Chrysler Spring Success sale brochure shows the Two tone vinyl bench interior with turquoise carpeting on the Newport. white or black vinyl roof standard. The brochure states the 300 would come standard with bucket seats. Could a 300 have been ordered with a Newport interior?

Yes. Spring Special, or regular interior, if you ordered a front bench seat in a 1968 300 you got Newport upholstery, or more likely Newport Custom upholstery.

If you ordered leather buckets in a 300, you got New Yorker upholstery.

When I looked at the order guide at www.hamtramck-historical last night, on this issue, the noted Newport Spring Special 2-dr interior is the normal Newport interior, just the different colors. In the 1968 model year, 300s could be cloth/vinyl bench seat interior as a "credit option" from buckets with the buddy seat. BUT although the seat frames might have been the same, the 300 had its own unique pattern style to differentiate it from Newports. Including different fabric weaves.

Unfortunately, the 1968 model year items did not include the Dealership Letter which would have announced the Spring Special models, their unique items/features, costs, and ordering codes.

When the 1968 Spr Spec cars were announced, I was a sophomore in High School and very interested in cars and particularly NEW cars. It was "bad enough" to put "station wagon style" woodgrain on a convertible, but that interior color choice amplified my "What were they thinking??" orientation several notches, back then. Plus, IF I had been a Chrysler dealer back then, I might have ordered ONE, two at the most, of that particular car. Some customers will always want "something different" and THAT Chrysler fit that bill.

As to cross-availability of different model interiors, my 1967 CE23 has factory buckets in it. The seats are the exact same pattern as the vinyl 300 buckets and rear seat, BUT with Newport dash trim and door/side panel trim. Only the seats match the 300 trim. Buckets in a Newport are somewhat unusual, as buckets are expected, to me, in a 300, buddy seat in the middle or not. As the 300 was the "sporty/performance" model, to me, they should all have buckets and console (with floor shifter). That the Newport could have buckets (with or without the floor console) is an upgrade in status, to me.

I was always under the impression the woodgrain Spr Spec option was only on Newports. Are the 300s mentioned in the "fine print" of the sales brochures? It seem unusual to put a lower-level Newport interior (of any type) into a higher-level 300 (to me and other buyers), all things considered for how things were back then.

Just some thoughts,

Yes.
THe 300 had bucket seats standard.
The bench seat was still king back in those days and you could get the Newport Custom cloth/ vinyl bench seats with center armrest.
You still got the 300 door panels btw.

The dealer would credit you a few bux for the down grade! Lol!
I had see many 68 300 with the bench interior.
