Hey all

Where can you find the "hidden" VIN numbers on a '68 Newport? Apart from the standard VIN on the dash and the fender tag?

68 used shipping order numbers on the body not the VIN.
Left rear tunk lip under the weatherstripping is where I found mine and matches mt broadcast sheet shipping number.
Anyone else know other places??

Rad support under the antifreeze sticker usually

Thanks so far.

@cbarge What is the difference between the Shipping Order Numbers? I've heard the trunk lips before. The problem is that my trunk rubber is a bit crusty. So I can't remove this without tearing it. Do you know places that have replacement body rubbers for the '68 newports?

@halifaxhops Will check that this weekend :)

Not sure if your looking for this too. Engine type/ID on a pad near the distributor, last 7# of VIN rear of block near oil pressure sender. Transmission on right side of case.

Found out by a buddy who had trouble getting a car across the border a few years back..
The customs officer had no clue that 68 Chrysler products used the shipping order not the vin so at first they thought the car was bogus stolen or whatever.

Anyways.. The shipping order is on the broadcast sheet right next to the VIN.
At the time Chrysler used it as its own reference.
68 was last year for stamping the SO on body panels.
69 saw VIN being stamped.
So when you find the numbers on your car it will look similar to something like this...

I had a similar problem with the Connecticut DMV many years ago.

The shipping order number is also on the cowl under the narrow weatherstrip. I believe that it is in the center of the cowl. Thankfully that weatherstrip has clips.

Thanks again for the information guys.
This will help a lot when I get the car to import inspection to get it registered.
