Why does the original air cleaner always seem to be missing on these cars?

What you didn't know!? Chrome air cleaner, MT valve covers and split single exhaust time all make it go faster LOL. Sorta like the coffee can exhausts on ricers.

Because when they get the car, they find out it stalls every time they try to go when the traffic light turns green.
They bring it to a friend who "knows all about cars" (i.e. changes his own oil) and the friend fiddles with two idle screws and says "try that".
The engine still runs like crap so he brings it to a mechanic "who works on old cars" and the mechanic says he needs a new carburetor that costs $450.00.
The guy chits his pants and goes to Autozone and they try and sell him an Edelbrock for $375.00.
He talks to his friend "who knows all about cars" who says, "Hell, you can get an Edelbrock carburetor for 1/2 that in one of those hot rod catalogs.
He looks at "one of those hot rod catalogs", shows it to his friend "who knows all about cars" and says which one do I want?
His friend "who knows all about cars" tells him to buy the cheapest Edelbrock carburetor and the cheapest Edelbrock manifold to go along with the carb. "Will make the 440 scream better than a hemi" he says.
The guy buys $$550 worth of Edlebrock carburetor and manifold and brings it to the mechanic "who works on old cars" to put it on for him and the mechanic says the hood won't close with that old air cleaner.
In a panic, the guy goes to AutoZone and buys a Chinese chrome air cleaner for another $50.00 that is "good for another 25 hp and better gas mileage".

And that my friends is why.
Btw the way, the Edelbrock never gets tuned in correctly and it still bogs..............

That brought up a memory! Back in the late seventies, a friend (great mechanic) was working in a small shop for this dirtbag. I stopped in one day and he was just sitting outside smoking.... In the shop was a 70 or so Corvette. He had done a bunch of work on the car, including a carb and manifold swap. The car was just about done, he thought the stock air cleaner would work, but he wasn't sure. He put the air cleaner stud in the carb, knowing he would have to cut it to fit. When his back was turned, his dirtbag boss came over said something about the car must be done by now and without any warning, let the hood drop.

The stud poked a nice little hole in the hood.

My friend got the wing nut off the bench and screwed it on the stud sticking up through the hood.... and said "there... it's done" and went out to have a smoke....

I considered putting a fresh coat of black on my air cleaner. Then I thought for a second and realized that it would look odd unless I put a fresh coat of blue on the valve covers. Then the lazy kicked in and none of it got painted.

The opera light looks horrible on it. Otherwise it could be made into a really nice driver, nothing that can't be overcome.

Beacuse everyone has watched the movie "Blues Brothers" and heard the BB Mopars with unsilenced air cleaners howl and they want the same when they punch it.
