Dave or anyone else who knows about this. I'm looking at a pair of used aluminum heads for a smallblock. Guy says there is a crack in the chamber at the spark plug hole. He said his machinist said it was ok. What do you think. He's a fellow racer. I don't know him, but we know the same group of racers.

I don't have a answer per say, but if it not to water sure they can run but I would be more concerned about the seat popping loose and causing havoc. The other side of the coin all aluminium heads can be fixed, welded, remachined, and bolt on. Price needs to be right.

That should be a moot point because I would never install a set of used heads without rebuilding them first.

Thats a good point Stan. I have been buying all my parts off the net. Most of it new. Saved a ton of $$$ so far. I just bought an intske from Wolffen a week or so ago. Saw the heads & where he was located. Turns out we know a lot of the same folks. So.....

Well here's the deal. My 318 is full of used parts. Just the cam, oil pump, carb & timing set are new. Been running it 9 years. LoL my friends say it's a wonder it even idles without blowing up. So on this 360 I said I was going to build it right so I could spin it to 6 maybe even 6500. BUT these heads are a deal. I have the equipment here at my shop to do a valve job. Haven't done one in years & never an aluminum or performance head. Always wanted to though. He is throwing in a nice Victor intake & aluminum rockers. I would have them PSI tested

It looks to me like that crack would be easy to fix. It looks like it runs under where the valve seat is pressed in.

Chances are it will be fine. Myself, I wouldn't run it on any short block that I had any serious $$ in.
