70 Fury 440 cop car video

These were one of the best Mopar police cruisers. Nice to see it out and about. Most likely a work in progress, missing trunk medallion, hood tags, wrong exhaust tips, missing Fury fender script. Also missing factory rubber floor mats and poverty caps. Still a very nice example of a '70 fury cruiser.

it looked like he was picking it up from a body shop. They filmed a sign about paint. I could not tell if the paint was new. I bet that thing hauls ***.

Very cool car. I'd be willing to guess we would all love to be the one taking it for a spin down the highway. You can almost feel the bottom end torque pushing you back in the seat.

They most definitely did. Cops used to drive them 130mph out in the more rural areas or on high speed chases. Very difficult cruiser to out run because it could run 130mph until it ran out of fuel and stay in one piece. Main issue was the early belted tires coming apart at those speeds. Fortunately the belted tires usually peeled instead of blowing out.

Geez, that’s bad ***. Mopar cop cars have a vibe that the others just don’t have. I love those sedans. Stripped down, dog dish caps and the understated V8 rumble, Dodge or Plymouth, it doesn’t matter. Bad ***, plain and simple.

The car was missing stuff as Dave said, but it looks like a work in progress. Door panel was off, no medallions whatsoever.

Even the girl with the dog said something like oooh wow at the beginning when she was walking around it.

Probably just got it from the paint shop and was excited to get it out on the road.

I'd like to see it all done.

hey-----i drove cars like that---first a 69 fury--still love it the most-----and they didnt just run at 130----they ran at 140+--in fact if traffic officers aired 150mph during a chase-- command officers would be yelling slow down!!!!!--------yep cars that ran out of town in a chase some times ran out of gas----but the corvettes and mustangs were running out of gas as well-------i am thinking the tires run were the cheap rayon bias ply------when michelin radials came out tom mcCahill did a test with the rayon vs the radial-----winner surprisingly rayon----michelin was still dialing in their product.....

'70 police cruisers came standard with 3.23 gears, so 150mph was probably not going to happen unless the car had the 2.76 gear ratio which was available. The '68 Polara with 2.76 gears ran about 146mph on the test track which was the fastest Mopar cruiser time recorded of the era. Car was difficult to stop and suffered from the front end getting "light" due to the flat nose which pushed a lot of air underneath. That was the main reason the cops like to have the front end low to hold the car on the road better. Dropping the tension screws a few turns did improve handling but tore up a lot of tires because it threw the steering geometry off. Most '70 cruisers in this area came with H-78 Goodyear Polyglass tires that had a six ply rating, the so called "patrol special". Had major issues with throwing chunks and peeling. BFG also made a partol series tire that was even worse, also belted. As noted, the L-88 Corvette or the Boss 429 Mustang could run with the '70 cruiser, then it was a matter of who crashed or ran out of fuel first.

our traffic cars had radar and if they were in the chase they would call out the speeds----yes 150 was called out----and one of the funniest chases was a rookie that ran out of town on highways he was unfamiliar with---it was raining hard----he was trying to call out signs to help us find him-----dispatch was in a tizzy----dave called out "how about slippery when wet" it became a classic----daves cruiser and the corvette he was chasing ran out gas within site of each other----dave walked up and arrested the driver---a sheriff deputy located dave about 20 miles outside of town----2 tow trucks were sent out.......when i was on graves or swings i would cruise out on the interstate and run the car up to 140---if it couldnt hit it i would write it up for a tune up....

3.23's with 27" tall tires would be running 6000 rpm at 150 mph. Guessing the tires were a bit taller than that though, so as far as engine rpm is concerned it's within the realm of possible. That and I wasn't there, and it seems savoy64 was...

pretty impressive considering the aerodynamics of the car and the tire technology of the day!

I have seen this video before. It was posted six years ago on YouTube. The wheels look like military green in color. Still think of my '70 Fury ex-squad in storage when I see it.
