Hi guys, i'm planning on a engine swap for my -70 Sport Fury. The stock engine is 318 and the engine coming in is a '66 383. I know i have to get proper engine mounts, what about the oil pan? The 383 were in a B-body before it was taken out.
The 904 tranny will be gone too, i'm going to get a 727 to mate with the 383. What about the driveshaft, needs to be replaced, but what kind? Anything else i need to know about the driveline?
Any kind of advice and help for the swap is warmly welcome.
Also cam recommendations, torque converter recommendations for a strong torque engine would be nice. The 383 engine has "some" cam, previous owner didn't know what it is because it was in the engine when he got his car from US. Rowdy idle and burned rubber nicely is all he knew. I'm pretty sure it's for higher rpm's.
I'm not going to change heads, just intake manifold, carb, cam, headers maybe or HP manifolds if i can find one?
:sSig_thanks:

When I was fixing mine from previous owner who dropped a 383 into a 318 spot the few things I ran across where Different Trans Mount, Shifter cable, idle kick down, accelerator cable although I cant say for sure on urs but I was able to keep my drive shaft but I only went from a small block 727 trans to a big block 727 trans. Also id check the rear end differential gearing to make sure it can handle the 383s power.

OK thanks. What is the trans mount like? I also heard that i need a different yoke for the driveshaft?

1970 Fury III 727, 904, and Driveshaft

Hi, I'm doing basically the same swap on a 1970 Fury III except 318 to a 440. On the driveshaft and front yoke, I found that the 727 extends about 3.5" further to the rear than the 904, so your 904 driveshaft has to be shortened to work. Also, I found that the external diameter of the slip joint at the back of the trans is 1/8" wider with the 727 than with the 904. Finally, the 727 front U-Joint/yoke is likewise 1/8" wider than the 904, so you would need a conversion u-joint to make a 727 front yoke work with a 904 driveshaft. In short, since the front slip joint, front yoke, and driveshaft are different, and the 904 driveshaft is light duty, you may want to consider a different driveshaft for your 727. My 904 driveshaft is probably going to end up in recycling when the time comes to actually pull the drive train. Hope this helps, Ben

Note: please make your own measurements, all the measurements above are rough approximations.

As far as the trans mount, I took some pictures of a 1970 727 mount yesterday. If it looks the same as yours and you need measurements of some kind, I'll try to provide them.

Thanks, good pics. I can get that mount from Schumacher, looked just the same. Been a little quiet now, car came from the body shop and it didn't go so well. A big issue finding the matching color, couldn't find it so the car is a two-tone car now..
I have done lots of work to list out everything I need for my project. What heads do you recommend for a nice cruiser? RPM's or Stealth? E-street? Thought about a RPM intake. Cam suggestions are warmly welcome what would work with best with wich head. A good torque engine is what we are looking for.

Get the internals specs for a 69 440 HP topped off with your standard Edelbrock intake system.
No headers allowed.
