Hello;
An odd thing I stumbled across...
The 1960 300F that was sold recently indicated it was purchased as a 999 code (blue) at Fischer Motors in Grosse Pointe, Mi.
SOLD - 1960 Chrysler 300F special order Polar Blue (999 paint code)

Years ago I tried to buy another 1960 300F, also with a 999 code (this one was gold). That car was sold by the same dealer, Fischer Motors in Grosse Pointe. Someone there apparently was good at selecting unusual cars to order.
BTW, the dealership building still exisits, it is a hardware store now.

Seems like the 300 Letter Cars had several paint options, but limited to about three colors. Red, white, and black. If an owner wanted a different color (than the three colors), the "999" code was probably designed for that fact. I would suspect the cars were ordered for customers, unless the dealer "got gutsy" and ordered a "999" color for normal stock. Thereby having a unique Letter Car for sale that others did not know could be done, I suspect. Might also make that particular Letter Car blend-in as "a normal Chrysler" until the specific Letter Car ornamentation was noticed.

That bldg. was also the hardware store scene in the movie ElDorado w/Clint Eastwood

We are very fortunate to have been the caretaker of this car now for nearly 48 years now after dragging it out of a corn crib near Omaha NE. We did not know the significance of the color though until we found the special car order form folded under the back seat floor mats.
There were a number of folks hot after the car when we bought it and after finding that form we knew just exactly why.
Sadly, the lower right corner is illegible.

Hope the car was bought by a flipper... I'm coming into some money soon!

Available colors for 60 300F.

1960
BB-1Formal Black9000
PP-1Toreador Red (m)71003E-399
WW-1Alaskan White8218E-69R-356
ZZ-1Terra Cotta (m)71053E-400

Other colors could be had if the dealer knew how to order them and they were approved. 999 would be placed in the PNT area when that occurred. I have a ZZ-1 version in original condition.

As the decoded sheet shows, the 999 code is special order color, but doesn't tell you what the special color was. It could be any available color.
