A/C Clutch paint or no paint?

I have an original 1965 LeBaron with 20,000 actual miles. I'm detailing the engine while trying to keep everything original. The clutch face on mine is natural steel or aluminum and not painted. All the others that I've seen have been painted which doesn't mean they are correct. Does anyone know if it should be left natural but clean?
