Hello everyone,

i bought a 60 Plymouth Suburban recently. Got it with no keys, so I'll have to send out ignition switch to get keys made. My question is the tailgate lock, the car has a power gate window operated by a switch to open/close with a key. I know the doors and ignition key is the same. Did the tailgate have its own separate key ? Or will one key work all 3 ?

Im not sure, I also have a 65 Chrysler. It has separate keys for the trunk.

Thanks
Tim

Mine is a MANual window. Same door key works for it.

What a cool ride ! Mines a project but a real solid one. A long way from yours but it will get back on the road ! I'm sure its a blast to drive !
Thanks for reply

I took it to the club lunch today. /6 3/tree! It just fell into my lap. Didn't 'want' one but the club let me know about it and no one wanted it! Stole it. A reverse lens is 1/4 the price of the car!

Ha ! I learned to drive on a 3 on the tree. No body wanted it ??? I've wanted one for decades!!! Believe me I know about parts prices. I've had decent luck on ebay, including back up lenses.
I paid 500 for my wagon.....paid 2300 to transport it here, Im in MA . But the upside is its a CA car, V8 automatic. Those slant 6s were great, had a indestructible 74 Dart once ! Enjoy your car, im thinking about a year before I drive mine.

Does the ign key cylinder not have a little hole at 10 o-clock or 2 o'clock position? I would suspect the ign switch would be installed in the dash before the key cyl is inserted into it, on the assy line. Door key cylinders are held in from the backside of the door skin. Possibly same for the tailgate cylinder.

On some of the Brand Z door cylinders, there was a keycode stamped into the key cylinder's outer housing. From that, a key can be cut . . . by code or by disassembling the cyl and looking at the tumblers (each should have a number to denote their depth).

So, carefully removing the lh door trim panel to remove the cylinder MIGHT be an easier way out. Otherwise, might look on RockAuto or similar for ign key cylinder and matching door cyoinders in a kit, for purchase. Then, the rear window can be "switch only" if desired, for now.

Not sure if that same situation might be operative for your car, though.

Just some thoughts,

Thanks for the info, the cylinder has a hole at 10, looks like you'd push in a tab to get it out. Haven't tried that but did find a place locally that can key it. I called Jessers Classic Keys in OH but they didn't reply. I talked to the guy i bought the car from, he lost the keys, but he said 1 key worked everything. So ill leave the doors alone, even though most of the interior is out. My Newport confused me with the trunk key but its an entirety different car.

I took my lock pick and got the tumbler to rotate far enough to allow me to push in the pin and remove the tumbler.
I, then, took the tumbler to my locksmith and he cut me a key.

If you're not good at picking locks, most locksmiths can do it for you.

Wagon tailgates were considered as a "door", so they had the same key as the doors... and ignition.
Tailgate cylinder usually has to be removed from the inside, a clip holds the assembly in. Once out a good key shop can duplicate the original key, which will then work on the rest of the locks.
Going through this now on my 66 T&C.

Thanks, good confirmation,as my 65 Newport, 2 dr, has a separate trunk key. Brought the ignition switch to a lock shop. Expecting to get it early next week.
Owners manual turned out handy... it did say in vague terms that 1 key for all on wagon.
