I was looking up the part # for the air filter in my 1972 parts book when I noticed that Chrysler and Imperial have a different part # than Plymouth and Dodge for the big block air filter. Do they use two different air cleaners?

My parts book lists the same filter for 340,360,400, 440, on all models except Chrysler and Imperial with 440 single snorkel.

One is probably California and the other is 49 state.

Like Stan said the difference is in the height.

340/400/440 All but Imperial 2863349
440 With Single Snorkle 2402677

2863349 2.770x12.810 / 11.020 inside
2402677 3.520x12.810 / 11.020 inside

Why the difference? No idea. No reference to CAP/ECS

Depending if it had a Holley or a Carter would have required different baseplates.
I think (!) the Holley base was flat and the Carter was dropped.

I have a friend that has both types of air filters, I'll check to see if there's a fitment issue between air cleaners and filters.

Some photo's of air filters and air cleaners, the orange filter and the black are the same in size. The larger orange air filter seems to fit the early style air cleaner so I'm not sure why it's listed in my 72 parts book. Sorry about the quality it was dark and cold in the storage area.air filter charger 012.jpgair filter charger 013.jpgair filter charger 016.jpgair filter charger 017.jpg
