antifreeze for 383

Just bought a 67 fury, hasn't been started for a long time so flushing out cooling and fuel system first.

Just seeing what ratio of antifreeze everyone runs? I know most premix is 33/77 but I've heard people running 50/50 in older cars. Any thoughts? Also recommended brands?
 
I always put in two gallons of straight Prestone ( or that animal friendly brand I can't find anymore). Let it run and top anything else off with water....
 
X2. Wow, I didn't know there was animal friendly anti-freeze. Where were you finding that at? I'd switch to it if I could buy it.
 
The chain stores......... I don't know how friendly it was but I used it regardless. I haven't seen it in several years and right now the name escapes me.
 
50-50 is the ideal blend of anti freeze and water.
Daves method works good in a totally empty cooling system, it will end up close to that.

Water transfers heat better then anti freeze, but for obvious reasons anti freeze with lubricants is necessary.
Most of the box stores will carry a 50-50, water to antifreeze, pre mixed. The green is recommended for your 383, unless you have aluminum heads, then yellow, or a blend should be used.
 
Just use 50/50 DexCool which is about the best out there. Aluminum friendly, not acidic like the
green (cheap) stuff and easy to detect leaks because of the iridescent orange color.
No need for any lubricants but if a complete and proper flush has been done, AlumiSeal is
recommended because leaks can occur where rust and gunge have been removed from mating
surfaces such as head gaskets. This product has absolutely no ill effects on the cooling system.

I get the Non-mixed glycol (green) anti freeze from Napa (Napa Brand stuff). Then mix it 50/50. Never had a problem with it, and I run it in all my vehicles.
 
I do what Dave does. Two gallons of anti freeze and top it off. If it takes more than two gallons of water, I then put more anti freeze in. Then I check with a hygrometer for proper mix. 50/50 is what's needed here because of sub zero weather. BTW, if it freezes, and it doesn't take much, a 440 cracks in the lifter valley area first.

Regarding Dex cool. There's a lot of information and misinformation about Dex Cool. In a perfect world, it works OK. It does have a bad reputation for eating gaskets and it will gel if contaminated with the green type though. It also does not do well in a system that allows air in the system, like an old Chrysler does.

After the reading I did on the subject, I would only use it in a newer 1996 and up GM car and not in an older car that was designed to use green anti freeze.
 
I usually run pure antifreeze in my wagon, when I was in the far north during wintertime I ran methanol.

I was running pure antifreeze in my wagon's 383 and it froze solid at around 10 below - all I did was take the belt off the water pump, started the engine and thawed it - pure ethylene glycol doesn't expand like water does upon freezing. That's why I switched to methanol when driving about the Great White North, 25 years ago. A bit hard on hoses at 50% concentration after a time, but it doesn't freeze until at least 50 below!

That is the worlds worst crap. Anybody that knows the background on this red goo change it out on the first day upon delivery of their new car.
It's the equivalent to dumping 100 cans of sealer into the system.
Me? Four heater cores later I learned my lesson.

I love the dex-cool in GM cars. It keeps the work coming in the door, intake gaskets, cooling system flushes, etc...
