Anyone had any trouble with wearing fuel pump actuator rods?

Twice in its life, my 1972 Newport has starved out of fuel at LOW RPM. My experience is that when engines starve out at HIGH speed, it is a clogged fuel filter. Starvation at low RPM was an unsolved mystery. FOR A WHILE.

Both times I found the problem was a worn fuel pump actuator rod. I measured it compared to the replacement, and found the old ones shorter by a significant amount.

Yet no one else seems to have had this problem, and it never happened on the 383 engine in my 1965 Fury.

Are we getting cheap metallurgy from China that is wearing fast? I am thinking about converting to an electric fuel pump to do away with this problem.

have seen 2 posts in last week in regards to worn rods...thinkin mayby l should be thinking about a inline or intank settup

Happened to me once on the 383 in my 65 Polara. Took me a long time to figure that one out, was long before the internet could provide any help. Of course it did have a bit over 300K on it at the time.

Yes! I had one was 3/4" worn and had fuel issues. This is after I had my engine rebuilt. I could not figure it out until I talked to my 91yo grandfather that told me many of the rods weren't hardened back in the day. I pulled the rod out and discovered how worn it was. I bought a new mopar part that was said to be hardened both ends and works great now. Depending on your cam make sure you have he correct one. Stock one is the best do not use brass ended one unless the cam calls for it.

I had a friend who's fuel pump rod on his 70 383 completely disintegrated...we never did find it, it was just gone!! We tore the oil pan off and everything....no idea where it went!!

Mine went 120k before it gave out. Ran fine, then one day it just wouldn't start. What kind of mileage are you guys getting on yours before their done?
