i got a complete right hand remote set up, but the housing is crap. I have the old housing from the butchered mirror but I will be darned if I can figure out how this is assembled. It doesn't look like the mirror is at all removeable.... but it must be!

Position the mirror to see how its fastened (screw or rivett) to the two holes you can see in the replacement. I suspect the moveable part is fastened and then the mirroe is glued onto it.

I have the disassembled mirror too. Most of it. I don't have a pic right now, but it looks like the cables go to the backing plate on the mirror. The backing plate is then on a ball and socket to move around.

Now that I am thinking about it, you might be on to something. The only way it could work is if the mirror was glued to the backing plate. Then you could remove the cables from the plate, the plate from the ball and socket.....

I'm going to try and separate the mirror from the backing. If it if breaks, I have a back up.

I have never done it, but I was told once that soaking in lacquer thinner would loosen the glue on the mirror. I'm sure some similar solvent would work too.

If I remember correctly on the older mirrors the glass was glue to the frame with the same urethane glue they used for the windshield and back glass. Try heating it with a heat gun.

I just did this with my 70 passenger mirror. The mirror was glued on to the mount in 3 places. Trying to pry the mirror off the mount without disolving or heating the glue will break the mirror. I reinstalled mine using good quality velcro in case I ever need to replace the glass again. There was an access hole on the mount and when you rotated the assembly you could line it up with the screw that holds the 2 pieces together. Of course on a 70 the mirrors are round....

It worked. Now I have something to contribute.

The urethane glue was no match for a Hyde 4" putty knife:

as expected, the mount had the wires from the controller.

By disconnecting the controller,

There was a enough play to disassemble the ball and socket.

With the controller completely removed, the wires could be pulled through the conduit and the whole piece from the mounting plate to the ends of the controller wires could be pulled through the shell.

After reassembly, the tension on the spring on the control holds the mounting plate in position. Just make sure you get the wires run right through the plastic pieces and don't force anything!

Here is the final assembly pic so you get the wires right.

Wish I'd seen this earlier..I'd have walked you through it. I had to do this on 2 Imperials to rechrome the mirrors. The pedestal is screwed to the head too.

Done now! Think I will put it in tonight.

Now, sorting out the dashlights....... the speedo is dark and I am hoping it is an easy fix!
