A month ago the wife blew a coolant tee and lost all the coolant leading to overheating. Spent the last month taking the engine apart when I had the time. Sideways V6 engine don't give you a lot of room. Nonetheless I got both heads off and noticed no problem with the front back except slightly low compression. The back bank had a crack between the intake and exhaust in #1 cylinder. Water sitting in #1 cylinder.

Had rebuilt heads ordered and put them in. Finished up the top half of the engine cleaning everything as I went. New gaskets of course. Then I went to the bottom end of the engine to deal with the oil pan. Not easy to get out as the exhaust system is in the way. Talked to my local muffler guy, came home, put the tools together and did it in 10 minutes. Some labor 3 hours. The pan was a mess. Brown muck in the bottom and the oil pan gasket surface a mess. Took an hour yesterday to get it cleaned up nicely and put it back in. Of course the entire bottom and bolts all cleaned up.

Today finished torquing the damper bolt and attaching the exhaust to the manifolds. Started the engine and heard a tap in the front back immediately although all valves torqued as per procedure. The absolutely worst part was I noticed white smoke out the tailpipe. WTF!!!

Anyway that has bummed me out so much she in now going to be without her car as I am done for the next few months. Sat out in the back yard and have already had a couple of strong Irish coffees with my favorite Irish whiskey. Back to the backyard now...

Copper gaskets...... :D

Assuming the valves do have proper preload, and your rockers are good, the next thing to make noise toward the top end would be a piston. It would typically be noisier when cold, and could have been scored/damaged when the engine was overheated.

If the water getting into the cylinder is not from the intake or head gasket, it could possibly be a crack in the cylinder...

The lifter stopped making noise the second time I started the car.

Going to take the intake off over the weekend and wonder if I should go as far as taking off the new head with new gasket in the back.

The missus is now getting irritated. Complains that with 8 cars she doesn't have a car to drive. The two daily drivers are sticks and then the older five. Says she should get a new car and maybe sell one or two of my older cars like the Cougar and Mustang which are worth money. The Cougar, my father's car and my first car. Over my dead body that will be the day. I could think of other solutions.

Have been looking around for a Corolla. Boring car but that is all she needs. Can't take care of a car so need something bulletproof.

After running the car several times I decided one more time and maybe drive around past 11:00 so any smoke would be less noticeable. First thing noticed, when running in the driveway, was the puddle of water forming under the muffler fro what seems to be a hole near the front seam. I wondered if the muffler got full of water.

So took the car out and slowly the smoke disappeared while driving. Still some upon take off but on the freeway, for 30 miles, nothing at all. Got home and checked coolant and oil. No change. Temperature steady and normal. With that I let the wife take it out today and there were no problems.

Sounds like the problem has solved itself. Time to keep your fingers crossed! :)
