Hi all! There's a peculiar problem going on with the brake lights in my 1965 Chrysler New Yorker town sedan, and electrical work isn't my strong suit, so I figured I'd ask if anyone else has had a similar issue.

The meat and potatoes of the issue is that my brake lights stop working when I engage the turn signals. Both brake lights work fine by themselves, and both turn signals work fine by themselves. However, When I hit either turn signal with the brake lights on the opposite side brake light dies out. It'll come back on once the signal is turned off.

This is a new thing that started happening this morning, and I can't wrap my head around it. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

While it sounds whacky, the brake light circuit goes through the turn signal switch. Why? Because the "running lights" are always on, yet the brake lights and turn signals are intermittent (i.e., blink). The "signal" bulbs have two filaments, one for each function.

Kind of sounds like the stop and blinker lights are out of sync. Each one works independently, but not together (as they should).

If you do not already have one, you can free-download a copy of the Chrysler factory service manual at www.mymopar.com , which has the wiring schematics in it. I suspect there might be a ground issue, somewhere, or a chafed wire. Might even be a bad bulb, with an internal issue?

Please keep us posted on what you find,

It could be a turn signal switch or another possibility is a bad ground. The bad ground is easy to check by just using a jumper wire to a known good ground and touching the light housings. I would do that first as there's no cost involved.

If you don't have a tilt wheel, a new switch is readily available. Rock Auto etc. have those.

Like Big John said, turn signal switches are easy to find, replaced two of them in my 65. The trick is to get the horn to work afterwards; touchy!

I'll pull my switch apart and see if that's the issue. My car is equipped with a tilt wheel, so I'm guessing a switch is a lot harder to find?
