Bullitt Chase 'Brake Downs' Ep- 01

Ironically, My brother in Phoenix just texted me last week asking about the Bullit movie. He has a customer that was one of the stunt drivers in the movie. The driver told him they tried to “detune” the Charger so the Mustang could stay with it. In the “making of the movie” cd I have they state the Mustang needed some series power upgrades just to keep up with the Dodge in the highway scenes.

According to an interview in the 80's with Max Balchowsky the Charger front end with torsion bars held up much better than the weaker Mustang front end in the jump scenes.
The Charger needed fewer repairs compared to the Mustang and in the film at the end of the chase the Mustang breaks an upper ball joint.

And they had to eventually yank McQueen out of the drivers seat. Too many close calls for the star of the movie!

Seems like that when the Mustang got heavier in '67, keeping the rubber bushings in the upper shock mount became an issue? It just got "beat out" of its normal location.

In an old CAR LIFE article on the two cars, when the movie was out, the Mustang's engine was taken apart, with some non-Ford parts added, for durability and power reasons. Yet the Charger was basically stock with the noted front suspension items mentioned in the video.

Neat to see all of the little "tricks" used in the production, too!

Thanks for posting the video,

The magical Charger that lost, like 7 wheel covers, in the movie? LOL!
One of the best chase scenes ever on film. Blues Brothers and French Connection are also up there in my book.

I think the last time I saw the movie I counted five flying wheel covers. And I believe the same one comes off twice! A
Bullit is a great car chase, and ahead of it’s time, but I go with the chase in Ronin as the best so far.

Saw it at the GNRS. It was pushed off in a corner with an auction sign. My buddy’s dad asked the kid “guarding” it if we could look at it and the kid said yah why not it’s for sale. That’s how we got to sit in it. Nobody cared it was there. It was like a fish out of water & totally out of place at that Hot Rod & Custom show...

So I have to admit something, I've never seen all of Bullitt. I even have it on DVD, but still to this day I have not seen the entire movie.

Movie chase scenes are rarely filmed at the speeds they appear to be running. They are well courergrafed, (?), at much lower speed and the film is sped up.

They would use a section of the chase multiple times, different camera angles, different in-car camera, so a single hubcap coming off might be seen more than once. The best example of the multiple angles is the section bouncing through the intersections, they pass the same green bug more than once.

Watching the movie Bullitt when first released in the theaters you could feel yourself leaning forward and back as they raced down the hills of San Fran.
