So wanting to clean out the engine bay but am unsure of what is safe to use and what to not get wet, etc. the car is not road ready, meaning I just recently picked up the car after it sat for 10 years. I turned it on a couple of times over the last week or so. I still have to adjust the carb to get it running well. Anyway here's what it looks like. A lot of pieces have surface rust besides dirt.

What products do you recommend to safely clean the engine. I thougth about spraying everything with a degreaser, letting it soak and then wash off with the water hose.

Thoughts?

Purple power works great. Best on a warm engine, let soak for about 10 minutes then rinse.

Plastic bags over the carb and dist are a good idea.

Good suggestions Will, another one would be to do this somewhere that will be easy to clean once you're done. A lot of degreasers are bio degradable these days so using them over gravel driveway is fine.

That's what I do all the time. I use Gunk engine degreaser and use a big *** wheel brush to loosen the heavy grime up, let it sit 15-20 minutes and hit it with a power washer.

If it's the first time and the engine compartment is extra nasty......I'll go to one of those do it your self car washes and do it there.

The Indian that owns it will come out screaming at you....
Truck beds after hauling an engine full of fluids and rolled over too.

LOL! Not when you do it at 2 am........Hadji is resting!

A power washer is a big advantage to use over just a hose pipe. Before I had mine I would use the "coin wash" facility...... But only after hours...... LOL.

If it were me, I would get it running and take it to a DIY car wash. That way, you won't be pissing off any of your neighbors or killing Flipper.

I have a Craftsman 2550 PSI power washer with a Briggs & Stratton engine. Very efficient and dependable. I use it for everything.....wash the cars, deck, siding, sidewalks, driveway, etc. I think it was around $300.

It is amazing how little it takes to clean an engine, my other Polara engine looked more black than red and with just a spray down it looked red and no scrubbing needed.
