Do I really need the insulation attached to the underside of the hood?

Hello, The replacement insulation I purchased was for the wrong car. Couldnt return it, Ive thought about just leaving it off. Will the heat from engine burn the paint on the hood. Just had car painted. Thanks in advance.

I've never heard of paint being burned off from engine heat. Now, if there was an engine fire... yeah.

I have always thought of it as a silence deafener.
Only throw it on based on your tolerance for quiet or noise.

I don't think the paint would burn, but I think that it may lessen the life of the paint on the hood due to the extra heat causing it to become more brittle over a period of time.I'm sure it would take quite a long time to notice though. As stated,it's probably there more for sound deadening purposes and to help keep the hood from resonating at certain RPM's.

It's there to quiet the engine noise and that's it.

The hood never gets as hot from the engine as it does from the sun beating down on it.

No ....... You don't NEED it. But it does make a big difference in sound deadening and you'll be happy you used it.
Unless your building a concours show car you don't need the expensive exact duplicate. A good pad can be had for under $50.00.

My Newport and my Mercury don't have it and I'm not having any problems with paint discoloring, ect. My truck doesn't have it either, but the hood is further away from the engine. No issues.

I do remember seeing a lot of cars in the late 70's that had cracking, flaking paint directly above the engine. This was during the era of the first "smog motors" and factory emission controls, so, I assumed the problem with the paint was caused by increased engine heat. A buddy had a '76 Mustang II with a 302. You couldn't put your hand on the hood after that car had been driven for half an hour or more.

Just dont have a chrome air cleaner. My father a a show with his 65 vett had the hood ruined from the sun reflecting off the air cleaner. Of coarse fiberglass car but still. He just had it restored. I've saved a lot of vette owner heartach by warning them. I like the look of the insulation plus I run the stock dual snorkel air cleaner.

Hood insulation is just that in Canada, insulation: something that helps keep the engine warm in winter time. You see it a lot on Canadian spec cars.

I don't plan on putting my hood pad back on....if I ever get my car back from the shop.

Good to see you back Catfish .. you've been out enjoying that boat I'll bet.

Yeah, the boat and the Shelby. I know the body shop guy got *** cancer and had it removed early this Summer, so my car was not a priority. I talked to him a couple days ago and pretty much demanded it's done before the snow flies this year.
