Dodge Durango

Anyone have familiarity with a 4WD Durango from around 2005? A friend of my wife, whose has a history of selling her cars off cheap when she wants to get rid of it, happens to be selling one. Exterior pictures show the truck to be in great shape which is expected since the family is Filipino and they always take care of their autos. Mechanically it has to pass smog but a comment about the truck running for awhile and then the engine shutting off caught my attention. Not to mention the horrible mpg of 12-15. My wife wants a backup car like I have and this is being sold for $500 subject to an inspection by me.

do they know it wont pass smog so they are unloading it?

historically speaking on new (ish) dodges - ive heard issue after issue about the heat/AC blend doors and all related parts, on trucks, cars, SUVs, all models. on my nitro, the motors that controlled the blend doors went out. on a friends 1500 truck, the blend door stuck halfway between hot/cold, etc.

I put 100k on an 03 that already had 100k when I got it. No major issues ever. 4.7 (not a fan) 4wd. My buddies still driving at over 230k. I've heard of the heater problems and the occasional trams issue. Other than that I haven't heard a lot going bad.

4.7s are ok engines if taken car of properly. Oil changes must not be neglected, etc, etc. Also, don't let em get hot, or they blow head gaskets right away (already been through that mess).

I like the durangos, but everyone I've known who had one complained non stop about the mpg's. they are terrible. Worse then the full size trucks. But for $500, how could you possibly go wrong??

Was supposed to look at it today. Not that I wanted to since I saw the horrible gas mileage. Anyway my wife's friend sold the Durango on Thursday for 4K. Why she would give it to us for $500 is beyond me but my wife says she is a little strange that way. Say you like something and she will sell it to you cheap or just give you it.

I think it would have been a great deal at 500, too bad she sold it already. Better luck on the next one
