Hi I'm a new member! I just got a 1969 plymouth fury 318 3 speed convertible. The rear end howls pretty badly over 35. It's not easy finding a donor car in Los Angeles since most yards only have cars from the past 20 years. Anyways, I found a 73 ish dodge van I was hopping I could swap the pumpkin out of it into mine. In the fury iii It's a 8 3/4 "741". The van also has disk breaks I was hoping might switch with my front drums (which suck and are past due) . Thanks for any info I can get. Please let me know what cars to search for with compatible parts. I'm not trying to pay retail costs of over 2000$ for these kits new.

Welcome to the board...post some pics of your car!

The pumpkin from the van....if it's an 8 3/4...will swap in. Only difference might be in the size of the U-joint. They do make an adapter U-joint to over come this issue. As for teh front disc brakes off the van...no go there. You need to get a disc brake set-up off a 69-73 C-body. The best set-up is the 73 set-up...since it runs the cheaper rotors. But the parts for teh earlier 69-72 are available...and other then the rotors...the 73 system is identical to the 69-72.

Thanks for the info thrasher! Do you have a website where I can order that u joint? @ commando it's a automatic

Are you sure it's the third member and not an axle bearing,,that's a lot of time and money for a guess,,usually when a pumpkin goes bad it will clunk when put in gear and grind and growel all the time,,,,or maybe it's a worn U joint,,,,,

Good point. Next time your out swerve to the right, and then the left. Or if you have a road with a long sweeping corner, to RT or LT, then hit it at a reasonable clip. If the noise goes away, or gets louder then it's the axle bearings.

I was just thinking about the axle bearings b4 i checked the forum tonight. At the the junkyard I looked at about 5 70's vans they all had 10 bolt 8 1/4 in them. well the howl comes and goes at about 35 mph. At least i got a couple nobs my buddy needed for his chevy truck. It is clunking when i turn but its intermittent.

I don't think so. I installed all new shocks and stanced it out with a proper set of wheels and tires.
