Car sat stored for 20 years with 1/4 tank of old gas. Draining, Cleaning, Replacing gas tank was not done, but other precautions were taken prior to firing up the engine. Car started on 1st crank with 20 year old gas - couldn't believe it!

Have been driving car for awhile and have gone through 2 tanks of new gas so far. Carb was acting up from the beginning so going to rebuild it, replace fuel pump and install 3 fuel filters (2 before pump, 1 after) to ensure no old debri gets to the rebuilt carb.

Was thinking of maybe replacing the manual fuel pump with an ELECTRIC fuel pump. Seeking comments & suggestions on;

  1. PRO's & CON's of using an Electric Pump
  2. What types and brands of fuel filters people have had good success with
  3. If possible, please post links to preferred products or provide brand, model or part number.

Thanks

can throw all the new parts at it you want..But would address gas tank...needs to be cleaned to enshure theres no crap or crud in there...if there is it will only travel up into other parts and possibly cause issues..good tank..good gas and go from there

fuel preasuer regulator ...had good luck with these units..extra port for fuel preasure gage

i'm not sure that the fuel pump will pull through two filters. i would make sure to replace the sock on the fuel pickup also.

Replaced the fuel sending unit with a new sock. The sending unit did not go bad because of the old sitting gas, just the old rheostat type contacts wern't touching.

Easiest and least painful way to freshen up the tank iz to make a trip to your local radiator repair shop and have them boil out your tank and then back flush your fuel line with brake clean and compressed air from the pump entrance back and you're done done.

Forget the electric pump, use the money to clean your tank and perhaps repair/replace the pickup. A fram G15 METAL CAN type fuel filter or equilavant between the pump and carb will be all that's needed. Avoid the "see through" glass and plastic filters....... think about it....!

100% agree with everything said and the mechanical fuel pump is great do not need or want an electric, trust me on that one. Search my name if you want more info on the matter, but trust me the factory pump is not your issue.
