Exhaust Flange Gasket

What are you guys using for a gasket between the exhaust manifold and the exhaust pipe at the flange. It seems every time I turn around either the bolts are loose or I'm having an issue with a leaking gasket.

When I've had to replace the gasket I've just gotten the ones that are available at the local parts store for a few bucks.

I ha found an expensive one (compared to the $2.00 parts store version). It bid double thickness. It requires a light torque and so far hasn’t burned through like the last two. I have the info somewhere I will find it.

So far so good after 2,000 miles. My other ones didn’t last 1,000 miles before burning up.

What bolts are you using?

I have found that the originals work best....they expand and contract with temperature at the same rate as the cast iron logs. If stainless or other metal is used, with different expansion rate, this can cause premature gasket failure.

I believe that they are grade 8 bolts? What were the original bolts?

I bought the “correct” replacement bolts and segmented nuts from R-T specialties.
Not the cheapest option, but I haven’t found the segmented? Nuts anywhere else.

I have use Remflex header gaskets on a couple of engines and they work great

I finally put these in last night. What a difference. I had no idea how much of an improvement these would be. I expected there was a bit of a leak, but oh my what a difference. It doesn't sound like the same car. I hope they lost well.

I have had my Remflex gaskets on now for about 4,000 miles with no issues including a couple of 6-8 hour runs with just shutting down for gas.

That's good to know.

One of the best things about last night was Aaron(11 yrs) helping out. Courtesy of a power steering leak that keeps everything on the drivers side lubed up he was looking like a grease monkey. I got a good laugh out of it. Remembering my Dad calling me a grease monkey the first time I changed the oil in a car.

I just ordered a set, thanks for the info!

I had Fel-Pro flange gaskets on there for a couple years and a few thousand miles, one side had just developed a leak.
