my 68 383 doesn't like fan belts, keeps breaking them. it gave me the chance to see my hot temp light come on.

is there any fixes for this issue?

You need to show us PICTURES of your alternator, fan, and P.S. pulleys and belts otherwise it's useless to try and troubleshoot.

the fan belt is just the water pump pulley, idler pulley and crank pulley... going to be till the weekend till the pics come...

this is not rocket science stan . no pics needed. the pullys are not aligned properly. i have never spit a belt in my life.. there you have it.

Are they the factory pulleys for the car?

Are you over tightening the belt?
(I like my belts loose to the point of slipping)

Alan

this time they were, when i flipped it back over. i'll try your advice when i go visit my car again

Does your car have A/C? Probably not since you say alt, fan, and crank. Does your alt. have a two groove pulley? If your car does not have A/C it should be a single pulley, most times rebuilds come with a double pulley, and it causes a big misalignment problem.

We can't say that yet.
Correct belts?
Correct alternator?
Correct PS pump?
Correct brackets?
Correct pullies?
Correctly installed?
Then you go to bad components such as bad pully....

Pulley bent.

There you go your most likely cause...BUT...didn't you post that the engine was "pulsating"? If any of these pulleys is out of balance, for whatever reason, but just a few ounces...could all be related. stand to the side while its running and see if the pulleys run true or if there is a wobble in one, see if the belt run even or appears to be pulled forward or rearward by one. Lets us know and please do take pictures.

his original post says water pump pulley, idler pulley and crank pulley. nothing else involved here

i've had the same happen. it's only off by about a quarter inch but it's enough to cause the belt to roll.
