I' think I've seen genuine cop cars before (and wondered about it the same way) with just the moldings off at the doors where the badges were installed, don't remember a specific car or model year. Edit: There you go.

In the DOH, they left all the trim on, except for the front doors for the stars. Even painted right over the trim in most cases.
